Dear DCIS Parents and Guardians,

We had another successful House Day on Thursday and I’m grateful to Mr. Liperis and his team for the great work they have done building the house system over the last 18 months. The buzz around the school on House Days is great. Personally I spend the whole day explaining that I’m not in Jurong (my wife is in Jurong hence the confusion) – I’m in all the houses! The House Day last week was a build up for the DCIS Sports Week which started on Friday with the Secondary School. The sports days will run all through this week for the Primary students – we hope Mr. Holmes has kept up his excellent relationship with the Singapore weather!

We had a very successful Dyslexia Awareness Week last week. A big thank you to the staff who featured on our awareness posters. Although it is inspiring to hear that Steve Jobs, Richard Branson and Albert Einstein all had dyslexia, students can directly relate to teachers they see every day that also have dyslexia or dyslexic tendencies. If you haven’t seen it already, please have a look at Astrid’s (Year 7) blog post on our school blog on managing her dyslexia – it is exceptional.

I recently mentioned that I’d met with Lola and other students to discuss how we become more friendly to the environment, especially around the use of single use plastics. From today we have removed all individual plastic straws (there are bamboo ones for those that can’t live without straws) and we have stopped using plastic cutlery. Some of our packaged drinks have straws attached to them and we’ll work with our supplier on alternatives for this but that will take more time. SODEXO have introduced a loyalty scheme for staff and parents that provide their own cups for hot drinks in the café – please pick up a card the next time you order your favourite coffee or tea.

Our STEAM representatives had a very good few days in Cambodia at the regional NAE MIT STEAM festival. Our team was very successful winning awards in the categories Collaboration, Innovation and Inquiry.

With half term approaching can I remind parents who may be leaving Singapore after this term to please let us know by 1st November. This is to allow us to offer places to those on our waiting list ahead of Term 2.

Have a great week and a great half term holiday.

Mr. Christopher Short
Principal
