Child protection at BIS Hanoi

Safeguarding your child at school is the most important thing for us to do as a school. I am sure that our school community will be aware of instances where children have been mistreated in various situations by adults. We pride ourselves on being a safe school for our children but we will not take things for granted. We have embarked on a course of training which will ensure that the school’s community understand child protection issues and what we need as a school to have the best procedures possible to ensure your child is safe in our school.

On Thursday, 20th August we had Mr. Tim Gerrish a child protection consultant from the UK at the school. I have known Tim for many years and have worked closely with him in the past. For many years Tim was a policeman in the UK. He was working with

CEOP

(Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) delivering child protection courses around the world, including Vietnam. CEOP was later taken under the wing of the National Crime Agency of the British Government. Tim now works independently to deliver training around the world through his company,

Tim spent the day at BIS Hanoi training our Vietnamese staff (Administration, Academic and Support) on Child protection issues. He delivered training in the following areas:

• Objectives of Child Protection:
• Everyone’s responsibilities
• Categories of Abuse
• BIS School CP/ Safeguarding Policy
• Safe spaces
• Making an Organization Safe
• UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
• Potential Online Risks
• 10 steps to keeping children safe online

He will return to our school in due course to undertake further training with staff and to audit what we can do to make our school even safer. The intention is that he also will undertake training sessions with parents so that whole school community can play a part in this important area.
