Mr Simon Higham – Weekly Update: 22/01/16

22 January 2016

Dear Parents,

It is my pleasure to write this weekly update while Mr Simon is in the UK on a recruitment trip. I know he was very disappointed to miss probably one of the best weeks of the year at the An Phu Primary campus celebrating our International Week. It has once again been a wonderful week of learning, celebrating and understanding more about the world we live in during our International Week. This weekly update is choc-full of photos and updates about what our children have been doing this week.  Our sincere thanks must go to all the parents that have supported this event especially all involved with the Global Cafe led by committee members, Ginette, Janine, Neelam, Lily, Lulu and Adrian. I think everyone that was there will agree they did an awesome job.  is also very important to acknowledge the time and effort that the guards, maintenance and cleaners put in to make sure a week such as this runs so smoothly. I know you will join me in saying well done and thank you to all of our 'behind the scenes' team.

Please read all about what has been happening around the school this week in some of the posts linked below.

We are very proud to announce that a BIS HCMC Alumnus, Tara Subba, was selected for the inaugural Schwarzman Scholars Programme 2016.  Please read more about Tara's achievements here.

A reminder that the Term 2 club programme begins next week. You should have received an email detailing your child's club allocation. If you need to check,  you can access your child's activity schedule via CHQ.

We are delighted that Johnny Woo from Malaysia will once again be taking photos of our students next week here at the AP1 campus. Please check the learning letter from your child's year group or class to find out which day their photos will be taken.

We will be holding our 'Settling in Workshop' for new parents on Wednesday 27th January at 8.15am in the gym, after drop off. This is a chance for new parents that have arrived this term or those that came later in Term 1 to hear from our admissions department, Mr Simon and myself and the school counsellor to help make the transition to Vietnam and BIS as smooth as possible for all. It is also an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have now that you have been at the school for a few weeks.

Please see further down to find out about our Annual Tet Collection and a job opportunity at AP2

The World Rooms at AP1 International Week

Our EAL and Learning Support departments hosted the World Rooms this year giving children the opportunity to participate in fun activities, listen to stories from parents and learn more about the world in a fun exciting way.  Check out the post by Ms Andrea Dix and Ms Lisa Sood with some great photos included.   The World Rooms at AP1

Year 1 enjoy their visits around the world

Year 1 enjoyed their trip around the world this week, particularly their visits to Asia in Year 1. They enjoyed the various activities in each class.  Ms Paula Phipps captured it beautifully in her article along with some more fantastic photos. Year 1 explore Asia during International Week

The Global Cafe

This week the entire An Phu Primary community were invited to enjoy the Global Cafe. It was a spectacular event organised by the PTG and supported by a huge number of parents. More international adventures from Year 4

Europe represented by Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain and Poland along with Australia could be visited along the Year 4 corridor this week. Read this post by Ms Melanie Wagstaff to find out what the Year 4 classes have been up to.  Year 4 explore the world!

Our Community Partners visit the Global Cafe

Along with members of the immediate school community, we were delighted to welcome over 100 community partner children to our Global Cafe this week. Not content with just providing the food and decorations, the wonderful parents also put on a superb dance show for our special guests.  Read more in this post. International Week at AP1 – Parents dance for our Community Partners!

Parade of Nations 2016

Colour, excitement, pride, are 3 of the many words that we could use to describe the Parades of Nations that took place at AP1 today.  It was a riot of colour, the air was filled with excitement and the feeling of pride was palpable amongst all that took part as they marched under their nation's flag wearing costumes and colours of their countries.  Visit this post to find out more and view the amazing gallery of photos taken by Adam Astley.  The 2016 Parade of Nations

The Tet Collection 2016

The deadline for the end of the Tet Collection is fast approaching. Thank you to all that have contributed so far. Please can we ask, if you have not already done so, to consider donating some items to this very worthwhile collection at this very important time in Vietnam. Please see the poster below which details what items are being collected. Your generosity and kindness is hugely appreciated.

 And finally…………

We would like to thank all the parents that have spoken to their drivers with regards to parking and avoiding the u-turns outside school. Please can we ask you to keep trying with this which will help to improve traffic flow outside our school.  We would also like to encourage all parents to avoid drop off and pick up, where possible, directly outside of Gate A. With the motorbike parking, the pavement is becoming congested forcing children to walk on the road. Please consider utilising Gate B or Gate C as a drop off and pick up area and also using the bridge from AP2 into AP1 to avoid crossing the busy road. As always, we thank you for your support in this matter to keep the traffic flowing and our children safe.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Dee Grimshaw / Deputy Headteacher
