Let’s Think in English is based on the concept of Cognitive Acceleration. This describes a lesson style which is designed to encourage students’ deeper more abstract thinking with the emphasis on reasoning and justification for their ideas. The programme helps both Primary and Secondary pupils develop the higher-order skills needed for success in English which also impacts on other subjects.
The programme develops students’ ability to express ideas, and improve their confidence with unseen texts - whether fiction, poetry or non-fiction.
Let’s Think in English lessons are largely oral and based on reading, with open-ended questioning and structured group discussion.
Here’s what some of our year 5 & 6 students say about their Let’s Think in English lessons:
“It helps me to think outside the box so that I try to see things in a different way… My perception changes.” (Jasminh, Year 6)
“We can share ideas and get inspired by them too.” (Allen, Year 5)
“It makes me think about how I figure it out.” (Asha, Year 5)
“The lessons help us to think deeply in a more abstract way… the problems posed are powerful that they are like a smack in the face.” (Skye, Year 6)
“You change your thinking because other people’s ideas may present you with more evidence and another way of seeing.” (Ryan, Year 6)
“It helps you to share ideas which is important.” (Michelle, Year 6)
A huge thank you to Michael for his insight into the Let’s Think in English programme and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future.
