Mr Ian Battersby: Weekly Update 12/05/2017

12 May 2017

Back in September, I announced that the An Phu Primary Campus and the Tu Xuong Primary Campus will be amalgamating.  At the time, I was not able to confirm exactly when it would take place or details regarding the new campus.  Now, the permissions have been granted, contracts have been signed and the build is well underway.

This photograph was taken at the beginning of April; the building work has continued at a pace and we are confident that the new campus will be ready to open in January 2018.  In order to keep parents informed, we are going to hold a series of meetings which will be repeated at both the An Phu and Tu Xuong Primary campuses.  The first two meetings will be coffee mornings with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and raise any concerns you may have.  The second set of meetings will be in the evening with more detailed presentations answering your questions and addressing your concerns.  The dates of the meetings are:

Date & Time

Wednesday 17th May @ 8.15am

Coffee Morning

An Phu Primary Campus – Multi-purpose Room

Wednesday 24th May @ 8.05am

An Phu Primary Campus Sports Hall

The amalgamation of the two campuses will mean change for everyone, and we hope that you can join Mr Simon Higham, Ms Dee Grimshaw (headteacher and deputy headteacher of the An Phu Primary Campus), Ms Mary and myself as we look forward to this new exciting development in the life of the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City.

Year 6 Tourist Survey

TX Y6 Survey-min

On Tuesday morning the Year 6 pupils went into District 1 in order to find and survey visitors to Ho Chi Minh City. Based at three sites, The Independence Palace, The Post Office and The Vincom Centre, the children had to stop and speak to people, using a survey they had constructed in school to find out their opinions on the city and the level of pollution. Although some of the children found it initially daunting to approach strangers and ask them questions, they quickly adapted. Despite inevitable rejections due to a lack of English spoken by the tourists or just an unwillingness to stop, our pupils persevered and every group succeeded in their task. There was a very positive response from many people, with compliments passed on about the good manners and level of spoken English of the TX children.

Toothpaste Collection

This afternoon, a collection box appeared in the foyer at TX.  Some of you may remember that a few years ago we had a similar one for the collection of toothbrushes and toothpaste and the TX community did a wonderful job supporting this cause.  Two students from the An Phu Secondary campus, Alois and Jeremie have taken up the cause once again, so we ask that over the next two weeks, when you are buying toothpaste for home, you would buy an extra tube to add to our collection.  We all know how important it is to look after our teeth so once more, let’s make a huge difference to those less fortunate than ourselves, by filling the collection box to overflowing.

The French Café

French Cafe-min

Crepes, fancy moustaches, hot chocolate and even the Eiffel Tower were all present on Thursday afternoon in the foyer at TX.  Ms Alice with her French class, helped turn a small section of TX into a Parisian café. Great fun was had by all, and that is not even mentioning how delicious the food was.  You can read more and see more photographs on Ms Alice’s post:

Teeball Invitational

U11 T-ball (1)-min

Teeball is a game similar to baseball or rounders except instead of the ball being thrown to the batter, it is placed on a tee for the batter to hit.  On Wednesday afternoon, 24 children from TX joined others from the An Phu Primary Campus, BVIS and the International School, Saigon Pearl to take part in an invitational competition.  To find out how they got on, please see Mr Ali’s post below:

Schedule of Fees 2017-2018

Please see the message below from Mr Tim Deyes regarding the schedule of fees.

Dear Parents

The Schedule of Fees for the Academic Year 2017-2018 has now been published. A copy can be viewed and downloaded from the school web site.  Schedule of Fees 2017-2018

You will note that compared to last year there has been an average increase in the school Tuition Fees of 8%.

We have endeavoured to keep fee increase within a reasonable increment that will allow us to maintain the same high quality of educational provision in a growing school. We remain convinced that we represent good value for money and are comparable with similar schools in Vietnam and elsewhere in the region.

BISHCMC Athelete Mary McAloon in the Danang IRONMAN-min

Perseverance has been a focus for us at TX this term and it is just one of the qualities required to complete a Half Ironman race.  After months of preparation and training our very own Ms Mary (along with a number of other members of staff and parents) participated in the Ironman 70.3 race in Danang last weekend.  The race itself involves swimming 1.9km in the sea, a 90km bicycle ride followed by a 21 km run.  A huge congratulations to Ms Mary, who completed the course in just over 6 hours, what a great example you are to us all showing that you really can achieve anything if you put your mind to it.  For more details and photos, please see the post below:

And Finally…

The benefits of having a partnership with the Juilliard School in New York keep coming.  On Tuesday we are looking for to a visit by Ben Moermond, another Juilliard alumnus.  He plays the bassoon – an instrument that many of our children will never have seen.  He will also be playing in the foyer after school, so look out for him on Tuesday 16th May from 2.30pm.  Also, some time ago, members of our choir recorded an extract from a piece entitled ‘Wondrous Garden’ by Jack Blume.  On its own, it sounded quite strange, but when you put it together with the pieces from the other 43 schools in the Nord Anglia family, the result is fantastic.  Please take a moment to enjoy this fantastic ‘Virtual Choir’ performance:

For those of you attending the ISHCMC Swim Meet, I wish you every success, otherwise, have a marvelous weekend.
