The official start of our Inter-House Competition has commenced. This week our four Heads of House organised their first assembly of the Academic Year to reflect on last year’s achievements and inspire their teams to strive for that winning trophy!

When students begin their education at BIS HCMC, they are each assigned a ‘house’ team: Hue Cheetahs, Hanoi Rhinos, Saigon Wolves or Dalat Dragons. Throughout the year, the teams will have the opportunity to compete for house points in a variety of different activities; Sports Day, the Rubik’s Cube Challenge, a Fashion Show, amongst others.

Here we speak to our Heads of House on how they plan to lead their teams to the winner’s podium. Let the competition commence!

Dalat Dragons

“As defending House champions, the capable and talented students of Dalat have a stiff challenge ahead of them to retain the crown.  However, it is a challenge I am 100% sure they are up to.  Last years’ House Captains; Nathaniel Vo, Anna-Lien Juelsbak and Thanh Tran, as well as all of our Year group captains, all did an amazing job representing Dalat by ensuring as many of our students participated as possible and encouraging to support each other throughout all of the House competitions.  I’d like to personally thank them for their amazing efforts as our success wouldn’t have been possible without them and I’m sure our soon to be elected house representatives will do an equally as good job.

No one event stood out for me last year. It’s the support that all of the students in Dalat gave one another, and the clear commitment they showed to everything they did which stood out for me.  If they continue in the same vain in all aspects of their school lives – whether that be academically, in sporting events, in musical and drama performance or care in the community – they will continue to grow as outstanding individuals.  By being humble in victory, gracious in defeat and giving their all, I will be a proud Head of House come June no matter where we finish on the ladder.  Go Dalat!”  - Mr Mark Jones, Head of House - Dalat Dragons

Hanoi Rhinos

“Hanoians always show what it means to represent the rhino, committing in their droves to all the house events and always competing with pride.

In Hanoi we’re all about the challenge of trying new things that you might not have thought you were capable of, and being competitive but not obsessed with the end result.  This has been shown with lots of participation across all of the house events last year, from the Fashion Show, to the Geography Photo Competition to the Film Festival where Hanoians turned out in force.

Hanoi are also an incredibly talented bunch, breaking records in the Swim Gala, possessing three of the top six individuals on Sports Day and demonstrating their creativity in The BIG Draw.  The support Hanoi show for each other is always immense, bringing the Ha-noise to every event!

House Leaders and Captains have gallantly led from the front, fostering the spirit of Hanoi, and I’m sure this will continue this year. Last year we said farewell to some of our seasoned Hanoians, however I’m confident our new crop will come in and add to the incredible house spirit and smash the house events.” - Mr Mark Spalton, Head of House - Hanoi Rhinos

Saigon Wolves

“Last year, students of Saigon Wolves participated in many different types of events, from solving Rubik’s Cubes to playing soft ball. We won in some of these competitions and we lost in others. However we always tried hard and showed commitment to the House.

Our main goal this year is to improve participation in order to win the overall competition. We have proved that this is possible. Two years ago we were third. Last year we achieved second place. We need to continue our progression and finish the year with the Inter House Competition trophy!” - Mr Pedro Roman, Head of House - Saigon Wolves

Hue Cheetahs

“I’m very excited for the 2017/18 academic year with the Hue Cheetahs.  I feel privileged to be spending another year as Head of House for this amazing group of students. Hue truly understand the importance of working as a team and participation is key in any of the House competitions. Last year they turned out in droves for every single house event. With double the amount of every other house for the 1500m on Sports Day, filling every event at the swimming gala and consistently having the most participants.

After the House survey last year we have tried to listen to the students and offer a really wide range of competitions. From Sports Day to the Analytical Chemistry Competition there really is something for everyone. I believe that no matter what people's preferences are, whether you’re a Sports nut or a Science lover, every individual student can contribute to the success of this house.  I know that Hue will Get Involved in all aspects of life at BIS HCMC this year.

Our House Captains will play a huge role in our participation and support at events, I’m really looking forward to receiving the applications from those Hue students looking to showcase their leadership skills. I know we are going all the HUE to the top of the house points this year.” - Ms Laura Gallagher, Head of House - Hue Cheetahs
