Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 26/01/2018

26 January 2018

Dear Parents

You will have received your Term 1 Spectrum this week and no doubt enjoyed the celebration of so much that happened on campus before the break. Well that seems a long time ago now but events on the calendar this week suggest that the next edition will be equally rich in student achievement and success. I begin this week’s update with a brief reminder of what we are trying to achieve with and for our students through the words of some recently returned alumni.

IB Success Stories

Having taken their first steps away from life at BIS after completing their IB Diploma in June 2017, we have followed up with some of last year’s graduates to share their thoughts on their BIS journey.

Hear from Ken Lau, Steve Ko, Haeon Yoon, Joshua Chang and Josh Kazzi about their IB Success Stories

Yet more student success…

Keenu Nguyen, also a 2017 BIS Graduate, unfortunately missed his summer IB exams due to illness but has recently heard that he has achieved an excellent score of 40 points in the November sitting.

Our congratulations go to Keenu as he now prepares to follow in the footsteps of his fellow graduates to pursue his university aspirations. At the moment Keenu is considering an engineering degree at a top London university.

Welcome to a new teacher- Mr Mustansar Hussain

This week we welcomed Mr Hussain to our maths department.

Mr Hussain is an experienced specialist Maths teacher who joins BIS from the UK. He has successful experience teaching secondary Maths including at sixth form level in London and international teaching experience in the UAE.

He has arrived in HCMC with his wife and has already made a very positive start with his new classes. I’m sure you will join with me in offering Mr. Hussain a warm welcome to the BIS community.

My earlier letter to parents of the students he now teaches details any changes to class teachers.

Global Campus Photographer of the Year Calendar

One of the benefits of being part of the NAE family are the many connections our students can make with other students around the world. Through the Global Campus Online platform our students are offered some excellent opportunities to extend their interest and skills in a variety of areas often taking on challenges beyond the school community.

Celebrating entries into the Global Campus Photography Challenge held at the end of 2017, the Global Campus Photographer of the Year 2018 calendar has just been released. Look out for BIS, HCMC student entries as you enjoy each month of the calendar through student photographs.

Students are currently involved in other Global Campus activities including a Creative Writing Challenge and Dance Flash Mob Challenge with many more on the way.

Learning from Julliard Alumni through ‘Ask the Artist’

Through the Global Campus Online platform students are also invited to engage with alumni from The Juilliard School

For the first in the series of “Ask the Artist”, students are given the chance to read about and pose their questions to Juilliard alumni Riley O’Flynn.

The Drama department are very excited to announce that we will be extending our Julliard programme this year to include Drama in addition to Music. Ms Asttley will be visiting the Juilliard School in March to find out all the brilliant things that we will be doing. As with the music elemnt of the Juilliard programme we look forward to welcoming visiting artists very soon but before that we have another exciting opportunity for students.

As well as Music and Drama, Dance is another element of the Juilliard curriculum and we have been given a great opportunity to connect with Juilliard Alumni Dancer and choreographer Riley O'Flynn. His work is incredible so we are encouraging students to follow this link to Global Campus to see his profile and some of his work. Students will need to make sure they are logged in (same details as your school log in).

This is an opportunity to ask Riley some questions about anything from dance, to his inspirations, to what he does on a daily basis? Riley will then choose some questions to answer. For those with a particular interest in the performing arts this will be very exciting. A video of him answering the questions be will available at the beginning of March.

Do take this opportunity to get involved in the first 'Ask the Artist' event.

BIS Film Festival 2018

Following the success of the previous two years, we’re excited to announce that the third annual BIS Film Festival is now open!

In recent years we have been thrilled by some of the previously hidden talents emerging on screen through our Film Festivals. Some students have been inspired to develop their interests in film making or performance through even more ambitious roles each year and so we are all eagerly anticipating the 2018 films.

If you think your child might be interested, you can learn more about it by reading BIS film Festival 2018

The growth of TEDtalks as a communication tool has been something of a revolution for sharing learning in professional fields. The concept of quickly and immediately sharing current knowledge across an international audience in short presentations has at its heart the aim to speed the development of human knowledge to be even faster than we are already moving.

Have you ever been to a live TED event or watched a TED talk?  Have you ever wondered what it might be like?  Well TEDx is coming to BIS HCMC very soon.

Come and join our independently organised TEDx event, Youth@BISHCMC on Thursday 8th March from 4.00pm at the Secondary Campus.

The theme for our TEDx talks is ‘Transformations’ and the line-up is now organised. You can find out who our speakers are and register your interest through the Tedxyouthbishcmc Facebook page

An Extraordinary Education

There are so many elements to a good international school education that make it unique. At BIS we continually reflect on what we offer our students to ensure it inspires and challenges them to develop as good people and deep learners. It is important that we seek our inspirations and guides beyond our own school community of course and so we consider ourselves fortunate to have great thought leaders in education at our side.

Lord David Puttnam, prior to his role as the Chairman of Nord Anglia's Education Advisory Board, was a hugely successful film producer, UNICEF ambassador and educator. This week I would like to share some of his thinking with you.

In this article Lord Puttnam shares the passion that inspires him as he guides the education of Nord Anglia Education’s students to be extraordinary.

Campus to Campus HCMC Style

Perhaps you may have seen our distinctive new BIS Bikes on Nguyen Van Huong recently. For those staff who travel between BIS campuses it is often more convenient, quicker and of course reduces the number of vehicles on the roads, to travel by bike.

Today it was great to see our Korean Admissions Officer, Ms Hannah Moon, on her way to our new Early Years and Infant Campus.
