Exploring the Rooftop Playground at EY&IC

11 May 2018

As the first F3 children went up the staircase to the roof, there were already gasps of wonder and delight. Delightful “squishy” grass, platforms to provide space for open ended play, tropical plants, different configurations of shading, a stimulating vista out onto the world around the campus and views stretching around the whole area… it was a great first day!

Teachers and assistants have been planning for the roof as a play and learning space since the campus opened, but this week the whole F3 team worked together to organise and sort resources and set up our brand new environment.  The first classes made their way to the roof on Thursday and Friday.

Children found a variety of bugs hiding in the grass or plants; ants, flying ants, caterpillars, which provoked lots of excitement and discussion, they did handstands and ‘roly polies’ on the grass and chose water play and construction. Children who live in Xi, HAGL or Tropic Garden pointed out their apartment blocks.

We had class circle times to talk about what children want to do/play/explore on the roof so watch this space for future developments to this wonderful and green area.
