Year 3 Update - Mathematics

It was not so long ago that the Year 3 update centered on English with a particular focus on the importance of reading. For this Year 3 update the focus is Maths.

In Year 3 there is a strong focus on calculations and understanding how the number system we all use every day, works. This often involves using physical objects to add or subtract using ones, tens or hundreds. All the while this understanding is being developed it is essential that all children practice mental calculations too.

The best place to start mental maths is by practising number bonds for common numbers such as 10, 20 and 100. This progresses to other number bonds and eventually learning all multiplication and division facts. By the end of Year 3 it is hoped that all children will be able to rapidly recall all the times table facts up to 12 x 12. To help with this, BIS HCMC has very recently started using a new learning app called TT Rock Stars. The app is available to all students at the school and is a very fun way to learn and develop times table recall speed. Year 3 will be using it in some lessons and also setting it for homework this week as ‘battle of the bands’ competitions to find out which of the ‘pod pair’ classes is the best.

Ask your class teacher for more information if you would like to download the app and play at home too.
