Mr Anthony Rowlands: Weekly Update 22/02/19

I have had  wonderful experiences at the school this week as I have been able to schedule quality time with BIS  students and staff.

On Tuesday, I visited our Design Technology (DT) Department  which I believe has the facilities to rival most international schools globally. It was very special to observe  a  range of students (Y12, Y9, Y7) in three different classrooms  learning about various  areas of  DT – researching, practical activities and illustrating to name but a few. There is no doubt that our students receive an excellent education in DT and are certainly enthusiastic learners in this area of the curriculum. I am extremely  grateful to Mr Chris Diver and his team for giving me a great insight into the world of Design Technology at BIS.

Anthony Rowlands Reading to students - BIS HCMC

During the middle of the week, I spent time in four Year 4 classes and I am grateful to Ms Lissy, Ms Eileen, Ms Gemma and Ms Jude for allowing me to read a story to each of their classes. We had lovely discussions about the pets that some of us have at home and  we enjoyed the story of ‘Mog the Forgetful Cat’ together. The Y4 students were extremely receptive and I enjoyed my time with them very much.

On Friday, I had  the opportunity to enjoy Mr Paul’s Y1 class assembly at the EY&IC. It was a really entertaining occasion with the children performing so well. It was also a pleasure to see parents attending to support their children. I was then able to spend time reading to four F3 classes and I am grateful to Ms. Holly, Ms. Gurvinder, Ms Fiona and Ms Sara for hosting me in each of their classes. Again, the students were wonderful and we enjoyed the story of ‘Bare Bear’ together.

FOBISIA Maths Champions 2019 - BIS HCMC

Just before Tet, a group of Primary students represented BIS at the FOBISIA Primary Maths Competition in Brunei. This is one of FOBISIA’s premier events with an extremely large number of FOBISIA schools participating. I am delighted that BIS won overall and, amazingly, for the second year running. This is the first time that a school has won  this event for two consecutive years which is an outstanding achievement. I was very pleased to have the opportunity to discuss the event in my office with the BIS Year 6 team, Gia Hung Tran, Su Bin Le, Gaeun Yoon and Phuong Ha along with  Mr Handscombe who accompanied  them to Brunei. Many congratulations to the BIS Primary maths team.

As I mentioned in last week’s update, we hosted two great events at the school last weekend. On Saturday and Sunday our Annual Invitational Swim Meet was held at the Secondary Pool. We had two great days of competition between 7 International schools and it was brilliantly organised by Ms Emily McClelland with the support of the PE staff. The BIS Barracudas performed brilliantly and came first overall with students from Y1 to Y13 representing the school. Congratulations to all concerned.

Community Football 2019 (25)

On Sunday, the school’s Annual Community Service Football Tournament took place  when our community partners joined our students to enjoy a morning of football. Once again, it was a wonderful event enjoyed by all. I am grateful  to Reem Mehanna along  with the community service team for working so hard on behalf of our partners. Additionally, a number of Secondary and Primary staff supported this event in many ways and I am grateful to them all. In both these events we were extremely well supported by our outstanding  parents who, once again, stepped up to the mark when needed.

I do hope that you have a most wonderful weekend.
