Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 21/06/2019

Dear Parents,

It is always a delight to bring new perspectives and expertise to our learning. Our welcome to visitors from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and our own BIS returning Alumni have been great features of life on campus this week.

Alumni back home from their university studies and early careers around the world joined us to share the thrills and achievements of their new lives since graduating from BIS HCMC.

Current students were fascinated by what they had to say in an ‘Ask the Alumni’ forum and clearly learnt a good deal from their conversations.  It wasn’t all one way though – the visit gave our returning Alumni the chance to reconnect with fond school memories, to enjoy reunions with teachers and students, to reminisce together and appreciate that they are still very much a part of BIS. For me, this is what these events are all about, a true sense of community and family.

A warm welcome back home to all our BIS Alumni in HCMC at the moment.

Overview of the week’s activities

Toothbrush and Toothpaste Collection 2019

British International School HCMC Toothpaste Collection

Do you remember the toothpaste collection of 2017?  Jérémie has now graduated BIS HCMC but Aloïs would like to continue this amazing contribution to society.

From the 17th to the 28th June we are asking for toothpaste and toothbrush donations.  For more details about the collection points and also the recipients of toothpaste and toothbrushes, read here.

Orphanage Service: Ky Quang Pagoda

BIS - Ky Quang Agoda visiting

The final weekend of the school year and our students are looking forward to a well deserved holiday. However, one group climbed out of bed early today to honour their commitments to the children at the Ky Quang Pagoda. During these visits they offer practical support to the orphanage staff and share time with the children in play and learning.

BIS - Ky Quang Agoda visit

Thank you to the staff, Mrs Lanyon-Jones, Mrs Brownrigg and Mrs Anderson for accompanying the making these opportunities available to the students.

IBDP Group 4 Project - A Mission to Mars

IBDP Group 4 Project - BIS HCMC

As a race, our natural curiosity has led us to not only explore our own planet but to explore further afield into space as well. With this in mind, the Year 12 IBDP students looked at the science involved in solving problems such as getting to Mars, searching for natural resources and surviving on its surface.

Chris Paine, Head of Science shares more here about the IBDP Group 4 Project - A Mission to Mars.

House Softball Competition 2019

This week it was time for the House Softball Competitions which took place over a few days for different year groups. Check out some of the play on our Social Wall.

What will that mean for the final House point standings? Find out in the end of year assembly next Friday...

LAMDA Examinations 2019

BIS LAMDA Examinations

This week we welcomed Julia Watson, LAMDA examiner who joined us to examine our LAMDA students in Acting, Musical Theatre, and Reading for Performance.

It is always a pleasure to welcome our LAMDA examiners, and to see our students taking on the challenge of these exams. It was an exciting yet slightly nervous time in the Drama department as the LAMDA students have invested so much in their preparations. Now we just have to wait for the results -we’ll keep you posted.

Year 11 Prom

Year 11 Prom 2019 - BIS HCMC

The Year 11 students marked the end of their IGCSE journey with a nostalgic event at the Sofitel.  Here we share a few photos from the Year 11 Prom.

Year 9 Expedition - Borneo

Year 9 Borneo Expedition 2019 - BIS HCMC

In May our Year 9 students embarked on their service-learning expedition, travelling overseas to Borneo.  This service-focused expedition provided a different experience to that of previous years, encouraging our students to engage in projects that have a life-changing impact on the people within local communities.

The students embraced camp life with enthusiasm and their work in the villages has helped to make a positive impact on the lives of people in both Bongkud and Tinangol.  Read more about the Year 9 Expedition to Borneo.

Year 3 Art Mentoring

Y3 Art Mentoring - BIS HCMC

Last week, a group of Year 10 Secondary students welcomed our Year 3 learners into their IGCSE Art projects that they have been working on over the course of the year.

Read more about the Year 3 Art Mentoring session in the Secondary Campus Art Rooms.

Summer Sports Camps 2019 - Suspended due to Summer Facilities programme

Due to the exciting facilities improvements work taking place in each campus over the summer holidays, and in consideration for the health and safety of our children around the extensive construction works, we have decided to not plan any summer sports camps in July or August 2019.

We look forward to revealing the new facilities to you in the new academic year when I’m sure you will agree that the improvements are worth it!

We do appreciate your understanding around this.
