Last week we welcomed back some familiar faces as 12 BIS HCMC Alumni joined us in the common room on Friday lunchtime to answer questions from current students about life after BIS. It was fantastic to greet so many alumni and welcome them back to pass on their thoughts and experiences to students who are just embarking on their post-BIS journey. Our expert panel was made up of alumni from the Class of 2013 right up to last year’s Graduates, and they had lots to say about their time at University and beyond. They brought with them a wide variety of experiences having studied across a range of disciplines such as the Arts, Business, Education, Marketing, Medicine and more.
Our current students were treated to hearing about the decision-making process our alumni went through at the point that they made their university decisions, as well as getting good advice on navigating the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). They asked insightful questions about the difference between the IBDP and studying in University, how to prepare best for University and what aspects of the IBDP were most useful, and how they have managed being away from home (and from BIS!). It was pleasing to hear about how well prepared they felt for university due to the breadth of courses taken as part of the IBDP, and the skills that they have developed through the IBDP core. They gave some brilliant advice about pathways through University and how to approach their studies in the run-up to exams. They also spoke of the importance of family and friends and maintaining a network through the IBDP and University.
Following the panel sessions, our Year 12 students were able to ask individuals directly about their personal experiences within their field of interest. It was lovely to see our students, past and present, connecting through the shared experience that studying at BIS gives them. Our alumni have also been in and out of school this week taking tours to see some of the changes that have been made in their absence and to catch up with their teachers.
We really appreciate the time that our alumni have given in joining us for this event and thoroughly enjoy having them in throughout the year. They have often remembered how useful these events were for them at the point that they made their university decisions and it is great that they have been able to continue this tradition and pass on their advice to our current students. We highly value the relationships that are built through their time in school and are pleased that the affiliation with BIS still remains. We’re always happy to welcome them home! #dontBIStrangers!
