FOBISIA Short Story Competition 2021 At BIS, children learn to write creatively and powerfully using ‘The Talk for Writing’ approach.

At BIS, children learn to write creatively and powerfully using ‘The Talk for Writing’ approach.

By following this engaging and enjoyable method, children learn the language and tools they need to write a range of plot types and non-fiction texts for a variety of audiences. This has had a wonderful impact on their writing, and we are proud of the quality and creativity of the work they produce.

Following on from their success in the NAE Creative Writing Competition and Comic Book Competition, our budding authors have had another opportunity to apply their writing skills. Our school is a member of the Federation of British Schools in Asia (FOBISIA), a group of 79 British-style schools across Asia. FOBISIA runs an annual short story competition for children in the Junior and Secondary age groups. This year’s theme was the enigmatic ‘Spark’, and the children were free to let their imagination take them in whatever direction they wanted.

Once again, the English Team was inundated with entries from our enthusiastic young writers. We were astounded by the quality of the writing on display, which ‘sparked’ with creativity. On the Junior Campus, we chose one winner and two ‘highly commended’ entrants from each age category: Year 3&4 and Year 5&6. The twenty shortlisted finalists each received a special certificate, and every child who took part in the competition earned house points. For the six winning and commended entries, we are planning a special surprise for later in the year.

The winners and highly commended entrants are:

Year 3 and Year 4

Overall Winner: Risa (Year 3)

Highly Commended: Zaara (Year 4);  Elly (Year 3)

Year 5 and Year 6

Overall Winner: Isabella (Year 5)

Highly Commended: Xuan Anh (Year 5), Charlene (Year 6)

The winner in each age category, Risa and Isabella, will have their story submitted to the main FOBISIA competition, hosted by Dulwich School in Shanghai. They will be joined by Pimrapat, the winner from the Secondary Campus. We hope you will join us in wishing them every success as they go up against some of the best young story writers across Asia.

You can read the year group winners’ stories here.
