Elena Segalini-Bower

Year 9 tutor, Biology Teacher

Elena has been as Head of Biology, Head of EPQ and Head of Teaching and Learning, Sixth Form tutor and teacher of A Level Psychology at Hereford Cathedral School (a co-educational independent day school) which she joined in 2008.

Elena was one of the three finalists in the Royal Society of Biology teacher of the year award in July 2015.

She is one of 15 members of the Royal Society of Biology Curriculum Committee (https://www.rsb.org.uk/about-us/committees/biology-curriculum-committee), a group of university researchers, professors, representatives from industries and teachers advising government on biology curriculum content.

Elena has been a KS3 National Science Strategy Lead teacher for Worcestershire and she has worked in both independent and state schools as a Lead Teacher focusing on implementing the most effective teaching and learning strategies.

She was educated in Italy and spent two years completing a Masters on Ethology (Ants Behaviour) as part of her Natural Sciences degree course at Parma University (Italy). During her PGCE course at Worcester University (England) she completed a project on the Active Learning Cycle comparing the use of Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic activities to enhance learning to more traditional teaching techniques. 

Her article on the Endoplasmic Reticulum Song homework featured in the School Science Review published by ASE (Association for Science Education).

 

I have a passion for Anthropology, neuroscience, languages and travelling. I am fascinated by the expression of human thoughts and emotions through the Arts. I love all art forms and especially the theatre, ballet and dance, music and art exhibitions. I absolutely adore the Hay Festival and going to Hay Segovia in Spain is one of the highlights of my year. I adore Chopin and could not listen to anything else whilst pregnant with my second son. I am a keen tennis player and I enjoy skiing, scuba diving, cooking, running, reading and period dramas. My favourite place is a small village on the northern Italian coast called San Terenzo, where I spent many summers and where both my children learned to walk. It is a hamlet in the bay of poets overlooking a nature marine reserve and next to Cinque Terre, a Unesco world heritage site. The poets Percy and Mary Shelley and Byron lived in this enchanted bay and it has the most glorious combination of art, nature, culture and food to enjoy.

Learning is a wonderful journey of discovery not only about the subject but about ourselves. Our amazing brain allows us to interpret what we learn in a great range of different ways, which makes each of our learning experiences unique.

The job of a teacher is to inspire, support, guide and facilitate this amazing learning journey.

I often feel that I am simply pointing students in the right direction, and giving them the confidence and tools to believe that they can independently find their way and making the most of the exploration.

Being a teacher is an amazing honour and the privilege of exploring and guiding minds is very humbling. I am inspired by my students every day.
