Maria Amalia Leitao dos Santos

Maria Santos

Year 9 Tutor, Geography teacher

I was born in Rio de Janeiro Brazil to Brazilian and Portuguese parents. I lived in Brazil until 11 years old and studied at the British School of Rio. When I moved to Portugal I did my secondary education at St. Julian’s School. I have been teaching for 3 years in international schools in Portugal. I studied Geography and Urban Planning at Nova University in Lisbon where I got my degree and I have masters in Environmental Engineering from Lusófona University also in Lisbon.  I did my IPGCE at The University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom and did my teacher training at St. Julian’s school. It was an interesting experience as I’m a former pupil of the school.

Before teaching I worked as an environmental professional. I worked as an Environmental consultant for a private company, as an Environmental Inspector in a cement plant and as a Quality Manager in the Peugeot-Citroen Group. My professional activities have enabled me to give my students real life examples and to be able to make the bridge between theory and practice.

Teaching is something that comes naturally to me and it runs in the family. My mother, grandmother and grandfather were teachers. I’m very enthusiastic about my job and have a great passion for teaching geography, which is something that I try to impart to my students. I enjoy, going to the cinema, to the theatre, swimming, playing tennis and outdoors activities.

I look forward to expanding my horizons both professionally and personally and I’m excited to be able to progress in my career.
