Originally from Lyon, France, Dr Florian Maisonneuve studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics in Québec, Canada and completed his PhD in Astronomy in New Zealand. Dr. Maisonneuve then fell in love with the teaching profession and started sharing his expertise with high school students at Ao Tawhiti School in Christchurch after earning a Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning from the University of Canterbury.
Dr. Maisonneuve has several years of experience in different management positions: Head of Science, Mentor of beginning teachers, Community Leader and Dean of Students. His priorities as an educator are to make school a safe place for every student, to establish supportive relationships, and to create a stimulating environment for every child.
He cultivates a fun and inspiring classroom environment and tries to take as many students as possible on astronomy camp trips to experience the awe of stargazing during cold winter nights. This, naturally, makes him a night owl and not an early riser — a habit which had to change with the recent arrival of his two children! Many of his hobbies, such as football and cycling, have taken a back seat to make room for his family, but he still makes time to enjoy singing in a choir.
