Dance Programme

Dance at Summer Performing Arts with Juilliard provides a supportive and inspiring environment for students to study a wide range of styles and expand their understanding of dance. Daily technique classes develop a functional understanding of anatomy and hone spatial and sensory awareness. Students are also encouraged to investigate their creative potential through an exploration of dance composition and improvisation. Performance opportunities develop confidence, and working in an ensemble cultivates community and a place of belonging. Through moving and sharing with faculty and peers from around the globe, students will explore dance as a means of self-expression, collaboration and self-development.

Course Descriptions

Courses are led by Juilliard Artist Faculty who are experienced dance professionals with varied skillsets and industry expertise.

Ballet/Modern Technique

Dance Discovery Majors and Young Artists

Each day begins with a dance technique class, alternating between Ballet and Modern. Following the ethos of the Juilliard School Dance Division in New York City, all students at our programme study Ballet and Modern equally. Classes focus on functional alignment and the specific physiological principals of these classic dance forms. The course of study in Modern classes is informed by the techniques of Lester Horton and Jose Limon, and also explores approaches to improvisation utilised by choreographers of today.

Self-Care and Stretch

Dance Discovery Majors and Young Artists

Our programme places great importance on physical health and self-awareness. In this class, students learn how to take care of their bodies during times of high physical demand, study the anatomical realities behind sound technique, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of their unique instrument.

Dance Composition

Dance Discovery Majors and Young Artists

Students will learn choreographic techniques, study the work of some of today’s great choreographers, and collaborate to develop an original group piece for performance.

Young Artist Seminar

Young Artists Only

A rotating panel of teachers and special guests give aspiring young dancers deeper insight into various aspects of dance and the performing arts as a career. Topics may include Acting for Dancers, Dance History, Professional Skills, Music Appreciation, and the preparation of a personalised Artist Mission Statement.

Semi-Private Lessons

Young Artists Only

Over the course of the programme, each Young Artist will have a semi-private lesson (2-3 students) in which ask their own questions and receive personalised instruction on their unique challenges from one of our master teachers.

Dancing Together

Young Artists Only

The techniques of partnering and ensemble work are often overlooked in dance training, but they are essential skills for a dancer. This class blends movements and techniques from social dance, contact improvisation, and choreographic strategies to teach students how to listen and respond to the physical cues of other dancers - and have fun doing it!

Dance Discovery Minor

Our afternoon Discovery students will have the opportunity to sample a wide range of dance techniques including Modern, Jazz and Tap. They will also experience opportunities to explore their creativity in movement through dance improvisation and composition, and to dance together in an ensemble. This course is suitable for a wide range of students, including those who may specialise in Music or Drama but wish to add more physical awareness and co-ordination to their artistic skill set.
