Last week BIS Hanoi hosted the Big Draw with two incredible collaborative drawing activity days for Primary and Secondary School students. The Big Draw is an annual event organised by the Campaign for Drawing in the UK with thousands of schools, galleries and museums from all over the world taking part. The theme for this year is STEAM Powered so students were encouraged to think creatively about different inventions and the importance and relevance of Art within Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. On Tuesday, Secondary school students were given the opportunity to draw on a huge, 10 meter long piece of paper in the Art corridor, one year group at a time. The final outcome showed a high level of skill, detail, care and control as well as a great interpretation of the STEAM theme. It was no different when Primary students were given the same opportunity on Thursday and this time it was even bigger with Early Years also getting fully involved with a Mini Big Draw afternoon. Over the two days students and teachers really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of drawing together and created some fantastic art work to display around school.

To further highlight the importance of Art in STEAM Education, special Maths and Science Lessons were also planned for Big Draw week. Inspired by Escher's Metamorphose 1, 2, & 3, representing his commitment to progress and improve over time, the Mathematics department trained students to use the principle of 'conservation of area' to transform basic shapes into forms limited only by their imagination. In KS3 Science students used equipment and experiments to create drawings or photographs. The students really took to the creative aspect of the task with many students looking at the use of light to create shadows in photography. Student also had the opportunity to construct their own 3D volcanoes!

The Big Draw hasn’t ended there either! Year 10 Art students have been designing final paintings inspired by the British Artist, Michael Craig Martin and the STEAM Powered theme. Once complete, these will be combined to produce a large scale wall mural in the new Art room. Finally, with over 250 entries for the Big Draw competition from Primary and Secondary school students, it is still too early to announce the winner so keep your eyes peeled on the website for the results

The Art Department would like to thank the students and teachers for their amazing participation in this year’s Big Draw and we’re already looking forward to planning something even bigger for next year.
