    I joined BSB, Shunyi, in August 2017 as Assistant Head and IB Coordinator.

    I am originally from a beautiful seaside village in Ireland and moved to England as a teenager. In 2002 I graduated from The University of Sheffield with a BA (HONS) in French and Hispanic Studies. Following the completion of my PGCE, again at The University of Sheffield, I remained in the city to begin my teaching career.

    Having completed a B.A. (Hons) degree in Fine Art at Leeds Polytechnic,  I spent the following year working for the Merseyside Artist-in-Residence based in studios near the city centre.  This ‘interesting’ experience encouraged me to seek a ‘real’ job so I decided to complete a PGCE course at Leicester University and then secured a job as Teacher of Art at a school near Southend-on-Sea in Essex.  Fifteen years later I moved to the nearby FitzWimarc School in Rayleigh as Head of Creative Arts, where I also met my wife, Julie, who was appointed as an English Teacher on the same day.  Whilst at The FitzWimarc School I also completed my NPQH qualification and subsequently moved to The Ockendon School as Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for staff induction and directing the student teacher programme for GTP and PGCE courses.  My final post in the UK was at The Skinners’ Kent Academy in Royal Tunbridge Wells, where my role as Assistant Principal included the line management of five departments, overseeing staff professional development and directing teaching and learning and middle and senior leader programmes.  During my last term at SKA, the school was inspected by OFSTED and subsequently moved from ‘Good’ to ‘Outstanding’. 

    Having gained an in-depth knowledge of the English educational system for thirty-one years, I found the opportunity to join BSB and develop my own knowledge and skills in a contrasting system too hard to turn down. I believe passionately about education, the positivity of young people and the hope it gives us for future generations.  Nothing we do is as important.

    Assistant Head of Secondary - Curriculum and Operations

    Nikki Upsall

    In my role as Assistant Head of Secondary -  Curriculum and Operations, I bring my analytical skills to the Secondary Leadership Team. My speciality is in the field of data and how to use that to improve student learning, enabling them to reach their full potential. In the curriculum role, I will bring my experiences developed in Dubai, where I ran whole school academic mentoring, pupil tracking and coordinated Teaching and Learning initiatives for staff.

    I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BSc (Hons) Mathematics in 2001 and went on to train and teach in the same city. In 2007 my wife and I decided to move on to international teaching. We spent 10 years working in Dubai at an international British school. There I led a Mathematics Department through a period of growth, being recognised by the UAE Government as one of the most successful schools in the country in the Mathematics PISA tests.

    I have been teaching on the IB Diploma Programme for over 10 years at all levels of Mathematics, although I specialise in Standard Level. I have a wealth of experience with the Internal Assessment aspect of the course and enjoy sharing that with all of our Year 12 and 13 students.
