Grade 11 CAS experiences

Annually, the Grade 11 students are required to complete a CAS trip, and this becomes a tradition in Leman. The grade 11’s Explore China trip was also their very first CAS project that they worked on all together as an entire year group. CAS, Creativity, Activity, and Service. The CAS trip offers the students an opportunity to experience all three aspects while enjoying a wonderful trip. Indeed, this is an introduction to IB diploma. This year, we went to Kangding and Tagong to help with a local orphanage.

Students are expected to meet their creativity goal by assigning individualized tasks and designing events or activities autonomously. In the Grade 11 class, students separate themselves into 5 main committees depending on their own strength: sports, art, music, food donation and media. Before the actual trip, the food donation group first initiate their plan, which is the bake sale. After this event, the other groups all start their mission, with each group preparing their equipment and thinking about some fun interactive events for the orphans. The creativity continues while on the trip as students group together every night while on the trip and have fun playing card games and engaging in activities ‘without their phones’.

For activity, students are expected to engage in some exercise before helping with the orphanage. This year, the Grade 11 students climbed up a famous mountain known as the “Zheduo mountain. We reached up to 2000 meters above sea level and it took 2 hours to complete it. This was a real challenge for most of the students. Additionally, students get to play sports with the orphans. We managed to play basketball, badminton and soccer with them.

Service is the measurement of students’ support to the orphanage. We achieved this by making donations and providing lessons to the orphans. In addition to the bake sale, Leman students each brought packages of necessities for the orphanage, which included clothes, gloves and study related stuffs like notebooks or daily things like water bottle. During the third day of the trip, we also bought a variety of different things from the local market for further donations, which included vegetables, meats, flours, etc.

In general, the 2018 CAS trip was a successful starting point for us to enter IB, and we hope that Extravagant Yak, the company that organized this event, could do even better in the future.
