Grade 6 Math

Investigating pi and area of a circle

The grade 6 students conducted an investigation to find out where pi comes from. Using string and rulers, they measured the distance around several round objects, as well as the distance

across the middle of those objects. They found out that the ratio of the circumference to the diameter gives them a value of pi = 3.1415… In connection with the pi activity, students also conducted an investigation of the formula for the area of a circle. They found out that using the formula for the area of a rectangle can create a formula for the area of a circle. Completing these activities gives students the opportunity to discover the origins of some common mathematical concepts and allowed them to grasp the full meaning of these concepts.

Dream Vacation Project

Grade 7 students are working on their dream vacation project. Ms. Crigger and Mr. Rico’s classes combined forces to engage in a collaborative effort to plan a vacation. The students are pretending to be entrepreneur vacation planners who are contacted by a family of four. The family plan to visit at least one popular or historical vacation spot during their trip. To assist in planning the lengthy trip, they are to design a scale map of their travels, provide choices for overnight accommodations, suggest the site to visit, figure the amount of gas necessary for the trip by automobile, figure the cost of gas for the trip by automobile, and look into possible cost of airline travel including luggage and car rental. This presentation should help the family to make informed decisions about their vacation.

In order to make a real-world connection to this project, Mr. Rico contacted and invited the Extravagant Yak travel company to make a presentation for the students. Extravagant Yak interns, Laura and Jacinda, taught the students how to effectively budget for vacation using an example of a real destination.

Standing Height and Kneeling Height

Grade 8 students conducted an investigation of measurements based on Leonardo da Vinci’s observation that the kneeling height of a person is three-fourths of that person’s standing height. Students measured each other’s standing height and kneeling height and found out that the ratio of one’s kneeling height is indeed three-fourths of standing height. This connects to the concept of direct variation equation that they are working on.

Grade 9 Mathematics

Grade 9 students are currently studying the properties of parabolas.  They have recently completed a research project in which they investigated real world applications of parabolas in things such as arch bridges, projectile motion and design.

Grade 10 Mathematics

Grade 10 students are currently studying sequences and series.  They have recently applied their inquiry skills to investigate connections of the Fibonacci sequence to phenomena in the natural world and to its use in art and design.  As part of this project, some students have produced some well-designed posters illustrating the power of mathematics.
