The Bigger Your Brain The Smarter You Are?

28 十月 2015

FALSE! This is a myth. Year 5 have really enjoyed our Brainwave unit where they have been able to debate lots of different ideas about the brain. In collaborative groups, they sorted statements into facts and myths such as:

  • Y5
  • y5
  • y5
  • Humans only use 10% of their brain.
  • Listening to classical music makes you smarter.
  • Your brain uses a fifth of your body’s blood supply.
  • Nobody knows why we laugh.
  • The brain itself feels no pain.

After this the children researched the different parts of the brain and their functions. The children were amazed by how many different parts of the brain there are. They created characters to represent each part of the brain and help them to remember them. Investigating neurons practically, using balls of string and our hands helped the children to grasp the idea of how our brain makes connections.

By playing games, the children investigated different strategies to improve their memory.  They were then able to apply this to their everyday learning. How can we remember things better in our lessons?

A big focus of our unit has been on developing a growth mindset.  The children have been learning about this during English and Topic lessons and are now applying it to their lessons and wider experiences
