Practical Skills for a Practical World

21 三月 2016

In Year 7 Design and Technology, students have been making noteholders as part of their Resistant Materials project. This project introduces them to working with wood and to the wealth of machinery in the workshop and they have been tasked to shape wood to a professional finish.

In this lesson, students have been focusing on finishing their pine wood to a professional finish using the band facer and abrasive paper. It is always fascinating as a teacher to see the different reactions from students when they are first introduced to new pieces of equipment in Design and Technology. You always get two polarised views; students who can’t wait to get on the machine and others who are understandably nervous. It truly is a highlight of my day when a student who was very uncertain about using a piece of machinery leaves my classroom with the feeling of ‘actually that was really fun!’

In the next few weeks, Year 7 will produce a fully working noteholder that they will be able to take home and use. Most importantly, they will have learnt a wealth of information about working with different varieties of timber and working within a workshop environment. Practical skills for a practical world.
