French as an Additional Language

FAL

In English

Hello everyone!

My name is William Saulnier. I am the French teacher at this school. I come from New Brunswick, Canada. The name of my French-speaking region is Acadia. I have also lived in Montréal, Québec and Poitiers, France. For the past two years, I taught French as a second language in Beijing. This year, I am proud to introduce the French classes I teach at Léman International School in Chengdu.

FAQ — Foire aux questions

  • For what grades is FAL offered?

This year, FAL is available for students in Grades 6 to 11.

  • What programmes do we use?

For Grades 6 to 10, we have chosen a framework of international standard levels that are used in Europe, Canada, and elsewhere in the world.  For Grades 11 and 12, Léman International School offers the Diploma Programme, which is the high school section of the International Baccalaureate (IB).

  • Can a student take FAL and another foreign language?

If a student is already taking Chinese or German, the student may opt to explore French during the enrichment period, but not as a full course.

  • How can parents and caretakers encourage their children to succeed in FAL?

You don’t have to know how to speak French! You can simply check in with them to ask what they are learning so they feel you value their education. You can also encourage them to use Quizlet.com (class vocabulary) and Duolingo (a language app for general vocabulary and sentence building). They are familiar with these tools. A few minutes of practice every day can make a big difference at the end of the year.

Multilevel Classes

There is quite often a wide range of learning levels in language classrooms and FAL is no exception. From beginner to advanced students, all French language learners are welcome. To provide adequate challenges, I have taught students how to use a variety of websites in order for them to acquire and practice level-appropriate knowledge in French. This use of technology in the classroom and at home encourages students to become independent learners and transfer their ICT skills into other areas of learning.

Small Classes

This is the first year Léman International School has offered FAL as a full-year academic programme. These are exciting times! The low number of students in FAL classes increases student-teacher contact. I have time to help students individually and address areas of growth in their language learning.

International Languages

The IB has three official languages: English, French, and Spanish. International students often live in more than one foreign country during their studies. Since French is offered at a good number of IB schools, students can easily continue their learning from one school to the next. Another advantage of taking French is that it is spoken in over 30 countries across the globe!
