Financial Aid and Scholarships
The British International School of Houston offers needs-based financial assistance. Visit our financial aid page to learn more about how to apply for financial aid.
Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA)
The British International School of Houston is approved as a Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) educational provider for the 2026–2027 school year. The TEFA program allows eligible Texas families to receive state funding that can be allocated toward private school tuition and other approved educational expenses. This initiative is designed to provide families with greater flexibility in choosing the best educational opportunities for their children. We encourage all families to review the TEFA website for details on eligibility, application timelines, and requirements.
TEFA Eligibility and Funding Allocation:
TEFA funding is determined by state guidelines and prioritization criteria, which include a financial needs-based structure and funding for children with additional learning needs. Please note:
- New students must be accepted to BIS Houston to receive any allocated funds. Please see our admissions page for more information about acceptance.
- The school has no role or influence in determining eligibility or funding amounts.
- We cannot advise families on their likelihood of approval.
- Additional support services for families are expected to be available from the provider once the program launches.
- We encourage families to carefully review the information on the official TEFA website, where you can also sign up to receive updates.
Notification and use of funds
- Families approved for TEFA funding will be notified by the provider. More information can be found here.
- Funds will be available in July 2026 through the Odyssey platform, which manages all TEFA allocations.
- If funds are allocated towards tuition payments, these will be made directly to the school via Odyssey throughout the year. Parents cannot request reimbursement for tuition already paid.
- Families may also use TEFA funds for other school-related expenses such as meals, uniforms, and transportation. We are working with our service partners to confirm their eligibility as TEFA-approved vendors and will share updates as they become available.
Remaining Tuition Balance
Families who are approved to receive TEFA funding, may choose to allocate it towards BIS Houston school tuition for their child. There are some important considerations for families to make:
- TEFA funds are highly unlikely to cover the full cost of tuition (families may receive up to $10,474 with additional funds for families whose children have further learning needs).
- Adjustments to the annual tuition balance will be made once the school receives official confirmation of TEFA allocations through Odyssey.
- Families remain responsible for the tuition balance as outlined in the enrolment contract. Payment options include: 1) Pay in full 2) Two-payment plan 3) Monthly payment plan.
TEFA and Financial Aid
Families who are currently in receipt of, or planning to apply for, tuition assistance through the school’s Financial Aid program, will be required to also apply for TEFA funding. Applications for Financial Aid for the 26/27 academic year open on February 1, 2026. Please visit the school’s Financial Aid page for information on this process.
Steps for Families Applying for Financial Aid:
- Submit Financial Aid information via the TADS Family Portal (opens February 1, 2026).
- Apply for TEFA funding through the Odyssey platform (opens February 4, 2026).
- Share TEFA acceptance or denial notifications with BIS Houston.
During the financial aid review process, BIS Houston’s Financial Aid Committee will consider TEFA approvals.
TEFA and Scholarships
It is important for families to note that Academic Scholarships are granted within the specific parameters outlined at the launch of a scholarship program, and committees approving such scholarships will not be provided with any TEFA information pertaining to any student applications/candidates.
