Mr Simon Higham – Weekly Update: 27/05/16

Dear Parents

Wow, what an exciting 7 days it has been across both AP1 and our whole school. It is a shame that President Obama could not take time out in his busy schedule to witness the many learning opportunities that our children have taken part in as I am sure he would have been suitably impressed.

Primary FOBISIA Games

FOBISIA-Games-2016-Logo-300

Tball1 (2)

Last weekend saw the arrival of 5 teams from across the region to take part in the 2016 Primary FOBISIA Games. They were:

Nord Anglia International School, Shanghai Pudong
The British School, Jakarta
Dulwich College, Beijing
Taipei European School
Kellet School, The British School in Hong Kong
(and of course, our own team from BIS, HCMC)

This event was not just a success in terms of sporting excellence but one that really showed our school community working together to provide the very best for over 300 children. Our thanks go to all of the helpers, supporters, coaches, teachers and children that made the weekend one to remember for a very long time. A special thank you to Mr Simon Grimshaw and Phil Husband for their impeccable planning and commitment throughout this whole event - well done everyone!

For more information about how our BIS, HCMC FOBISIA  squads performed over the weekend and to view a selection of photographs, please access the post written by Mr Simon Grimsahw, PE leader.

The full gallery of photographs can be viewed by using this link.

I hope that you enjoy the video of the event that was unveiled in assembly this afternoon.

Year 6 Travel to Gopeng, Malaysia - 6I, 6N and Tu Xuong (Trip 1)

Gopeng 1

Congratulations to all of our children from 6I and 6N who travelled on their residential trip to Earth Camp this week. Having teamed up with their BIS peers from Tu Xuong Campus, the classes hiked, climbed, abseiled, caved and continued to push themselves further than they have done before whilst further developing their self confidence and independence. Take a look through the many posts that were made on the AP1 Residential Blog to gain a wider understanding of the activities that they took part in.

Good luck to all of the remaining Year 6 classes who travel to Earth Camp next week. Their journey can also be followed via the AP1 Residential Blog.

Year 1 - A Focus on Writing

Where the wild things are

Inspired by the fantasy genre and the book 'Where The Wild Things Are', our Year 1 children have been putting pen to paper once again to improve their writing skills. Read more about how they have persevered to ensure that their writing has progressed through this topic area and read some of the examples of writing that have been produced by accessing the post by Ms Anna Coy, Year 1 Teacher and Assistant Milepost 1 Leader.

Year 2 - Science in Action

science

This week, our Year 2 children have been learning about medicines following a visit by Nurse Shen. Find out what Ayman and Julie, two children from 2S had to say about their experiences and what they have learned.

MP3 Awards

We are delighted to announce that we will be presenting our MP3 students with awards this year to celebrate and highlight the efforts and achievements of the students in Year 5 and 6.

The awards will be across a range of academic and non-academic areas. Criteria for each award has been set and the teachers have spent a great deal of time discussing and nominating the recipients.

We know some children may be disappointed if they don’t receive an award but there will be future presentations for the Year 5s next year and in secondary school for our Year 6 students.

A letter to the parents of each award winner will be sent inviting them to a special presentation assembly on Thursday 16th June at 1pm.   The letter will not stipulate what award each child has won.

We hope that the awards will serve as both recognition for the efforts of the children but also as incentive for the children to always be the best they can be.

Aquathlon Challenge 2016

Aquathlon

The Annual BIS Aqauthlon is upon us again with both Primary and Secondary students able to take part on the same morning of competition. For more information about this event, including the distances, location, meet times and sign up please refer to the post by Mr Phil Husband, Director of Sport/Head of secondary PE.

As mentioned in last week's Update, we are delighted to announce that after a month of judge’s deliberation we have been awarded Overall Winners and Most Ambitious Design for this year's Global Challenge across 42 Nord Anglia Schools. Not only did our Rube Goldberg machine involve students from all age groups and showcase different departments within the school, but it also crossed a road in Vietnam. No easy task! More interesting details can be found in the Rube Goldberg article.

Please enjoy our winning entry in its entirety.

Y4 Community Project with EAST

EAST

Throughout all year groups at BIS, our Community focus is a priority for all of our children's learning. Although our focus for service learning is based around giving empathy and time to our community partners, there is also an element of necessary fundraising too. Back in February, our Year 4 children and the PTG worked together to produce a bake sale with an environmental awareness. Find out how much was raised and presented to EAST (the Year 4 Community Partner) this week, through the post written by Ms Jude Handscombe, Year 4 Teacher and Milepost 2 Leader.
