We were noticeably anxious during our first group game and struggled to play good football but we managed to come from behind to win 2 – 1 against a determined AmIS team, who were playing in front of a home crowd. Max and Seo Jun claimed the goals. This result helped us to relax and we gained a comfortable 4 – 1 victory in the second group game against CIS – Yurii scored a hat trick with Andy scoring a volley late on in the game. Sam scored an early goal in the final group game against AIS but we were unlucky to concede a late penalty which resulted in a 1 all draw. However, this was enough to send us through to the semi–finals as group winners and a match with ISHCMC.
We were really excited to reach the semi-final game but after a slow start, it was 0 – 0 at half time. Mr Whiteley, told us to stay composed and continue playing in the wide areas to create space. In an amazing second half, we scored 5 goals – Sam, Campbell 2, Yurii and Rafael all scored as we blitzed the ISHCMC defence.
In the final, we faced SSIS and began the game strongly – Seo Jun scored in the first attack of the game and a few minutes later Yurii scored a second. However, we knew it was going to be a tough match as SSIS fought back and scored two goals in five minutes to level the match at half time. In the second half, SSIS scored again to lead 3–2 and we were under pressure, but still creating chances. With minutes to go, Max played Seo Jun through and he finished to make the score 3–3 and take us to a penalty shoot–out.
Max and Rafael both scored while Khanh saved the first penalty. This meant Yurii had a chance to win the game – the keeper got a hand to his penalty but could not keep it out so we won the match and the tournament. We celebrated with a mixture of relief and happiness that all our hard work had paid off with a victory. Many thanks to a coach, Mr Whiteley, for such a great season.
Congratulations to all the players for their determination, resilience and never give up attitude.
