Loy Krathong

This year, we will be having a more prominent Loy Krathong celebration with a return to wearing traditional Thai costumes for the day. This will take place on Thursday 22 November. For those of you who are new to Thailand, Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar and is a celebration at the end of the rainy season paying thanks  to the water goddess, Mae Kongkha (Mother of Waters). The krathongs which people make and float on the waterways of Thailand are offerings to her.

The day will begin with two special assemblies - one for Y1-3 starting at 8.30 a.m. and one for Y4-6 starting at 9.15 a.m. Parents are very welcome to come along. The children will then have the opportunity to make their own krathongs in class.

As mentioned, the children and staff will all come to school wearing traditional Thai costume. These costumes will be readily available from local markets - our nearest market is behind Pridi Banomyong Soi 2 - from large supermarkets and from specialist stores, such as https://www.facebook.com/phahuratdotcom/.

Eco Warriors Need Help with Community Garden Project

Meet the Eco-Warriors

121118 ks2 6

We are a club that cares deeply about our school and local environment. In our club we are learning skills to help us get back in touch with nature and take better care of our planet. We would like to involve more of our STA community so we are asking for any enthusiastic parents who have some knowledge of gardening to come and help us to make our garden a success!

Look at what we have been doing so far. There is so many opportunities to learn.

We have been making our own planters and learning to plant different vegetables and investigate how to take care of them. We have also been learning to construct tables using an allen key and basic instructions. We even made our own scarecrows using recycled materials to stop the birds from eating our plants.

We are also collecting donations of old fabric and clothes to make new bags for life. We are learning to make patterns on the materials and sew the bags together. We have also designed our own unique logos so everyone knows that we made the bags. We are still collecting fabric so if you would like to make some donations we are collecting old clothes and curtains. We would be very grateful! All donations can be dropped off at T23.

Visiting Author - Jonathan Camm

On Wednesday 28 November, KS2 have an author visiting for the day: Jonathan Camm. Jonathan has written a series of mystery books - “The Countdown Mysteries”. He will be spending one hour with each KS2 year group, in which he will tell the children all about his job, and he will explain the process he goes through when writing a book. It will also be a great opportunity for any budding authors to ask Jonathan questions about what he does.

Jonathan will be selling and signing his books during the day; however, a Google form has also been shared with all KS2 parents, so you can simply fill in the details stating which book/s your child would like. If you have ordered books, the money should be brought to the School Office either on Monday 26 or Tuesday 27 November.

Word Mania

Round 2 of Word Mania has now begun. All of the KS2 year groups have made it to this round, and are currently in the top 3 schools in Asia! Well done to all the children who have taken part. This round continues until 16 November. Besides being a lot of fun to plan, it is also such a great way to improve your child’s spelling. Please encourage them to play as much as possible at home. For tips on how to help your child to get a higher score, as well as other fun spelling resources, please follow this link.

Save the environment...and a  few baht too!

As we continue our efforts towards being a sustainable school, our partners, such as STEPS are doing the same. They are offering a 5 baht discount on a drink if you bring along your own cup. It would be nice to see more people bringing their own cups along as so many of us have them these days. It’s not about the discount, but about setting a good example to the children and other members of the school community.
