Grade 4 had a great camping trip to Hemingshan for three days. As well as learning the basics of camping, they took part in a number of tasks to challenge their athleticism and courage. Our very professional guides, from Keystone Adventures, set up a number of activities for the children to complete.

The first task was a 4 hour hike to find our campsite, through wooded hillsides using only a map and compass for navigation. The three groups managed to do this by themselves, with minimal help from the guides. After the challenging hike, we set up our tents in the middle of a bamboo forest and set about preparing their own meal of pasta bolognaise. The following day, we hiked to a cliff face where our guides had set up various rock climbing routes, and a repelling route. We learned the rules of climbing safety, how to use the equipment properly, a lesson on geology, and some knot tying. The children spent most of the day learning how to climb and repel, and then practicing their techniques. Our guides were very experienced, so they were able to help the children learn rapidly and safely. During the second evening, we gathered around the fire and bragged on each other. We also roasted marshmallows and made s’mores. On the third day we broke camp, and headed to the ancient town of Xinchang, where our guides had set up a scavenger hunt for the children to complete. This necessitated the children to engage with the local people, ask questions, and learn some facts about the old customs.

Throughout all the activities, the students learned how to work together, as well as how to encourage, and support one another. We arrived back to Léman having had a wonderful experience. This was the last trip managed and undertaken by our Athletic Director, Mr Brian Bedford. We were so lucky to have him directing our trips, and every child always came home safe and well. We will miss your expertise, organization and care for the children. Thank you Mr. Brian for many jobs well done!!!
