Summer Collaborative Performing Arts

In June, we had a fantastic talk from Colin and Eric Jacobsen about the important role performing arts can play during difficult periods, like COVID. Click here to view information about Colin and Eric. During the time they have spent indoors, they have chosen to look for more creative outlets for their musical abilities - virtual collaborations!

This summer, we challenge you to utilise whatever performing arts abilities you have by reaching out to family, friends, the community and beyond to create the ultimate, creative, collaborative performing arts project.

The project will run throughout July and August with a showcase of your fantastic submissions at the start of September. We may even have a surprise judge!

Competition Rules

Your collaborative piece can be:

  • With yourself (e.g. dancing to a choreographed piece)
  • With another person (e.g. you singing whilst they play the violin)
  • With a group (e.g. you dancing whilst the group plays a musical piece)
  • With your parents (e.g. them singing whilst you play a musical piece)
  • AND more!

We encourage you to test your limits! What can you do in the virtual environment in which we currently live? What technology can you learn and utilise?

BE CREATIVE! We cannot wait to see what you come up with!

See a few collaborative performing arts videos below for inspiration!

Video 1 is a collaborative performing arts piece produced by Juilliard, Bolero, featuring musicians and dancers.

Videos 2 and 3 are Paganini with Dance Heginbotham for Guggenheim Works and Process that Colin and Eric mentioned during their talk, with Maile Okamura, (Colin's wife , who is a dancer herself) as videographer.

Videos 4 adn 5 are two installments of a theatrical project that Eric and Colin have been involved with for a decade based on Walt Whitman's Song of Myself with Compagnia de' Colombari. A project that was meant to happen live at the Arts and Ideas Festival in June, and instead occurred virtually - due to COVID.

Video 6 is one of our very own students, Austein Stein from North Broward Preparatory School, performing his entry for the NAE Young Musician of the Year competition.

Competition Tips!

This is about reaching out and collaborating even though you might not be able to create or perform in a group in person! If you're looking for creativity in your entry, think about the following:

1) What have you been inspired by and why? Who can you reach out to, to create?

2) Your team may want to explore multiple performing art forms in this response - great!

3) Your team might want to work on a cover, interpretation or original work - great!

4) What technology do you have to use and do you understand how to use it? Watch the interview with Colin and Eric as they talk about this.

5) Think about setting up some regular times to meet as a team both to discuss ideas and practice.

6) Enjoy        - we can still be creative and enjoy creating together, nothing is going to stop us!

Submit your Collaborative Performing Arts project on the wall below!

Please share your collaborative piece via a YouTube or Vimeo link. If this is not possible in your region, please use a shareable link, so your friends across NAE can see your pieces, as well as our possible surprise judge!
