In these past few weeks, PK students learned the Juilliard Creative Classroom lesson - The Light (and Heavy) of Spring. They are learning and differentiating light and heavy sounds by creating movements that demonstrates either heavy or light feeling depending on what they hear.  The JK students learned the Juilliard Creative Classroom lesson - Introducing “One” and “Many” (Rose – “Chants du Burgam”). They could clearly distinguish the difference of “one” and “many” by doing the call and response activity. In this activity, one student will do the call and the other students will response. The SK A and B students learned the Juilliard Creative Classroom lesson - Exploring Bach's Dance Rhythm. The students explored Bach’s Bourrée rhythm and experiment different ways of rhythmic patterns to complete it. All PK, JK and SK A and SK B students had a lot of movements with Ms. Silvia.

Rhythm, one of the elements of music, is the focus of the subject for the first 3 weeks of the school year. The students used their body parts and drum set to make different sound patterns.  Beat and rhythm differences were thought also to the students. After the topic rhythm, the SKC proceed in learning the musical notes and values which is connected to our current Juilliard lesson, Exploring Bach’s Rhythm. This lesson is about making different patterns of sound to complete the Bouree rhythm. The G1 students Juilliard lesson is Exploring Bach’s Scale Shape which is about understanding what it’s like to sing a melodic steps to create various shapes and contours of solfege. The G2 students started learning basic piano and Juilliard lesson, Dotted Rhythm and Characters. In this lesson, students are learning the difference of even and dotted rhythm. The G3 students have started learning and playing recorder. As of this week, students are learning Juilliard lesson, Gesture and Phrase, which is about experimenting their vocal qualities to distinguish gestures and phrases within a solo melodic line. The G4 students started learning guitar and Juilliard lesson, Complexity Through Rhythmic Variation which is about composing set of rhythmic theme and variations with the focus on increasing complexity.

Our Grade 4 students are doing so well developing their basic guitar skills and our 5th grade students are also improving their performance skills in their respective string orchestra instruments.

G6 students started the school year in making skit about the Performing Arts Learner Ambition of Nord Anglia- Juilliard. The students were great in portraying each ambition and they delivered them well. As of now, G6 students are having a Juilliard lesson about Interpretation and Style which is about using musical tools to shape their own interpretation of musical phrases.

7th Grade students are currently focusing on our Juilliard Creative Classroom lesson “The Great Arranger”. They are arranged the piano piece of Ligeti into an ensemble piece, they reflected on the process that they did and the choices that they made in their composition. They performed their music arrangement and revised it to make it more interesting. They started making connections on Ligeti’s Musica ricercata No. 7 for solo piano and his Third Bagatelle for Woodwind Quintet.

After a succesful presentation of the Performing Arts Learner Ambitions, the Grade 8 class are working on the Juilliard Creative Classroom activity “The Evolution of a Musical Form”. This is an activity under the corework World of the Orchestra.  Students where able to learn a simple minuet on the piano which is actually a piece by Rameau’s. They learned how minuet was composed as a dance music and what other way to explore it but by actually doing a little dance routine that goes with it. After they performed a dance, students began to update their minuet on how they choreographed their dances. They began to reflect on the movements and the intricacies of it. They also learned that Beethoven was the one who got out of the norm and started turning a minuet into another form which is called the “Scherzo”. Students where given a task to update their minuet and turn it to an scherzo and they did a presentation about the choices that they made to make their composition more unpredictable and exciting. We are currently doing a music reflection where the students are analysing Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, III Movement.

The Grade 9 and 10 music studuents worked on the unit “ Creating Composite Rhythms” a Juilliard Activity focusing on Chants du Burgam ( Folk Origins). They started by experimenting on diffirent rhythm and layering it using percussion instruments or their voices. They performed it and reflected on the choices they made when it comes to arranging it into an ensemble percussion piece. They listened to “Cheikh Anta Diop” and did an analysis of the music. They also learned the history of Chants du Burgam, Doudou N diaye Rose and Chants du Burgam within Senegals Historical Context. Students made a composition of composite rhythmwith a group using their own instruments. They reflected on the process and is currently working on a paper that talkes about why Chants du Burgam is considered a great material to teach Folk Origins.
