CISA Poetry Slam

What is Slam Poetry?

Slam Poetry is a form of performance poetry that combines the elements of performance, writing, competition and audience participation. It is performed at events called poetry slams or just slams. Poems are encouraged to be delivered with high energy and passionate, and often follow emotive themes.  The concept of slam poetry originated in Chicago in the 1980’s when a local poet, Marc Kelly Smith, feeling that poetry reading and poetry in general had lost their true passion, had an idea to bring poetry back to the people.

On Friday 29th March six students from Leman represented the school in the annual CISA poetry slam at CDIS and performed some very high energy and passionate poems for the audience of parents and teachers from six schools from Chengdu. While it can be terrifying, to perform your own work in front of a large audience our six students gave commendable performances and we were very proud of their commitment.

Unlike a poetry reading, a slam poem focuses as much on the spoken element of the poetry as it does on the literary elements. Poets should learn their poem by heart, some lasting as long as 3 minutes. They should use intonation and enthusiasm to move and engage the audience.  Our six poets most certainly did all of these things, giving very true performances.  Well done to our fantastic volunteers: Sunjin Lim, Seung Shin, Jasmine Penstone-Miller, Lastisha Wong , Yoon Soo Min and Tiffany Vo. A big congratulation to Tiffany who gained 2nd place in her age group, although her amazingly confident and skilful performance was definitely worth 1st place in our eyes. Just fantastic.
