JK Classes Go on a Treasure Hunt
For the IEYC unit "Going Places" we researched into different modes of transportation and where they take us. JK Students led an inquiry into pirates and pirate ships. We read the book "Pirate Queens", a historical fiction children's book. It is based on the true story of two pirate queens who defended their ship while the pirate men were sleeping. This book inspired us to make our own pirate ships. Mr. Felipe, Ms. Jill, Ms. Lauren and Ms. Amy surprised the JK classes with maps that the students needed to follow to find the treasure.
We used our knowledge of maps and directions to follow the treasure map around the school. We took risks and made decisions about which way to go on our journey to our treasure. We also overcame attacks from giant squids, storms and big waves. We had to respond to the story by moving our ships along with the conditions. Using loud scurvy pirate voices and phrases like "Arrrr me hearties, shiver me timbers, walk the plank, Yo-ho away we go". We also had some help from mermaids and dolphins. We kept following the map until we found the X mark. We found our treasure! We displayed a caring and principled attitude by sharing the candy found in the treasure chest. JK students and teachers had an aarrghh-mazing adventure on the high seas!
