Outstanding Academic Results

Despite the disruption caused by the Covid-19 virus this year, Léman teachers and leaders are determined to push ahead with ambitious curricular changes for the 2020-2021 academic year. School Principal, Mr. Tom Ferguson, comes to Léman with a wealth of experience in the delivery of ambitious and challenging programs for children in some of the most prestigious schools in China.

“I have spent 11 years with the world’s largest schools’ group in Nord Anglia Education. During that time, I have seen how the implementation of curricula that are challenging for students can lead to sustained growth in academic achievement for all. I have witnessed in the Nord Anglia International School of Hong Kong and the British School of Beijing how high standards, driven by academic rigor, and supported by high quality teaching, have resulted in a continuous year on year improvement in exam results.”

Mr. Ferguson was delighted with the recent results awarded to pupils in the 2020 IB graduating class, where the average was an incredible 37.07 points out of 45, with 43% of students scoring 40 points or more, the standard needed for acceptance into the world’s elite universities.

“The results achieved this year were truly remarkable. Any school in the world would have been thrilled with such high attainment and very few can match it. Of course, we cannot rest on our laurels and will strive to continue to support our students to achieve more than they ever imagined. Our approach is to build success into every stage, starting with our very youngest children in Early Years and supporting students as they progress from Primary to Secondary school. We do this by selecting the most challenging curricula and hiring outstanding teachers to deliver these programs.”

Mr. Ferguson and his team are determined to give students in Chengdu the same academic advantages enjoyed in other cities.  “LIS Primary has already started this process with the implementation of the English National Curriculum for Maths, English and PE for the coming year. Integrating this with the International Primary Curriculum will give the best educational experiences, providing for the holistic development of our students, while ensuring they benefit from the high academic standards which we insist upon. We are proud of our established STEAM curriculum from MIT, the world’s number one university, and our Performing Arts curriculum from the world-famous Juilliard School. These unique programs were specially designed for Nord Anglia schools, and alongside our Global Classroom and UNICEF collaboration, give our students an experience beyond the reach of other schools.”

The Primary school is developing a complementary parent information pack to help parents understand the key objectives at each stage of their child’s learning, as well as how they can support their children to reach the high standards these changes will bring. In conjunction with the Léman Family Association there will be workshops planned over the coming months with our teachers to help to fully unpack the curriculum for our parents and students.
