People tend to believe that for pupils to reach a high level of performance they must surely be something quite special - have the right genetic profile, come from the right family background or be themselves highly motivated and committed.
At The British International School Bratislava we are convinced that the percentage of high performers can significantly increase if we create the optimal conditions for success. Our approach is focused on getting large numbers of students to the levels that were once thought to be the domain of only the most able or gifted students. We know what it takes to get there and what is likely to stop students from achieving at that level.
High Performance Learning is our unique approach to education, developed by Professor Deborah Eyre, (Education Director at Nord Anglia Education) which helps everyone reach high levels of academic performance. It is based on the latest educational and neuroscience research which proves that all children, if they are an active part of a thriving and inspiring community of learners, can flourish and become intellectually and socially confident young adults.
Our High Performance Learning approach is about learners developing expertise in the subjects they study. In our school, children are not simply receiving, memorising and recalling bits of information. They are guided by skilled teachers in the discovery of knowledge and the application of that knowledge. Learning is not a passive experience, it is a shared and active experience that is a joy and becomes lifelong habit.
As individuals, our students all follow their own path but their options are broadened by the wide variety of exciting and challenging opportunities we offer which go far beyond the classroom. All our students have unique access to Nord Anglia Education’s Global Classroom, which develops their global conscience and connects them to a global network of learners and an unrivalled selection of challenge based learning activities. It is a safe on-line environment with activities and areas for all ages of children from the age of 7 to 18 years.
The Global Classroom gives access to experts in their field across a broad spectrum of subjects: authors, musicians, Grand Masters in chess, dancers, engineers - all who field questions and debate among our students at any time of day. Students are encouraged to develop their skills in these areas by competing with the other 26 schools in the group through initiatives like ‘Dance Unites’, the Kasparov Chess Challenge, and currently The Water Challenge where students are asked to tackle a specific global water issue and provide an engineering or scientific solution.
To further develop our students by stretching them intellectually, physically and creatively, we have introduced a new initiative at the British International School Bratislava – The Enrichment Programme, offering our students enhanced opportunities to develop a greater depth of knowledge, skills, creativity and sophistication in their learning through broader educational experience. The programme encourages risk-taking and challenge-based learning, teamwork, collaboration and community engagement. In the Primary School this might take the shape of residential Eco projects or Science and Art Weeks when these subjects dominate the curriculum, enabling students to participate and develop their understanding and skills much more than would be possible in the normal allocation of time in the weekly timetable. In the Secondary School older students will work for a number of weeks on Wednesday afternoons on a specific project, which might be, for example, drama based, service based, science based or preparing for a specific event like The Model United Nations and European Parliament.
This programme is helping our students to develop into well-rounded confident global citizens who are fully equipped to meet the challenges of their future lives and to be the type of people who make a positive difference to the world around them.
High Performance Learning means we have high expectations because we believe that through hard work and participation all our students can reach high levels of achievement.
