I graduated from St. Mary’s University College Belfast with a Bachelor of Primary Education and Geography. As I specialised in Early Years Studies within my degree course I then took a post as an Early Years 1 teacher in the Edith Stein Kindertagesstatte, Wolfsburg, Germany. After an enjoyable two years within this school I then moved to London where I took a Year 3 post in St. Joseph’s Primary School, Willesden.

I have been living in Qatar for six years with my husband and teenage daughter. I have worked with children and young people for the past nineteen years both in the UK and Qatar. Most recently I have worked in two international schools in Doha delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. In addition to this I have trained in assessment and verification procedures with City & Guilds in the U.K. which provided me with great insight into the variety of settings (nurseries, schools, Surestart centres), and their philosophies. This broad understanding makes me open to new ideas and professional development opportunities.

Initially I studied for an LLB Law degree at the University of Surrey which I completed in 2010. It became apparent by year 2 of my degree that the courts were not a place for me and as I became a university ambassador alongside AimHigher I was sure that teaching was my forte. I then decided to take a year out and I worked as a nursery assistant in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I began to apply for PGCE’s specifically in early years (3-8 years) and was accepted to the University of Cumbria.

Having grown up in a small town in the west of Ireland I moved to Dublin to study Arts in Humanities. During my degree I spend a semester studying child pychology and early childhood education. I had a great interest in these areas and soon applied for PGCE in Kings College in Aberdeen. Following I worked in an all-boys school in Dublin for 8 years. Within my teaching career I have taught in all key stages.

I qualified as a teacher in 2001 in the UK and worked for two years there before starting my international teaching adventure.  During my career have taught all primary age groups and led both curriculum subjects as well as pastoral teaching teams.  As my career has progressed I have developed a passion for the teaching and learning of younger children so, having originally thought that I would focus on teaching science to Years 5 and 6, I have found myself drawn to the cross curricular approach and my favourite year groups are Early Years and Years 1 and 2.
