Germany: the Third Reich 1933-45 by Geoff Layton

The title charts the emergence of Nazism to Hitler's consolidation of power in 1933-4. It analyses the economic and foreign policies of the Third Reich as well as providing an in-depth look at the Nazi system and how that impacted on various social and cultural groups. The issue of support and opposition to the regime is examined and the appeal of Nazism discussed. The book concludes by assessing the legacy of the Third Reich and how different historical interpretations of this period have developed over time.

The 'Hitler Myth': Image and Reality in the Third Reich by Ian Kershaw

Few twentieth-century political leaders enjoyed greated popularity among their own people than Hitler in the 1930s and 1940s. This remarkable study of the myth that sustained one of the most notorious dictators, and delves into Hitler's extraordinarily powerful hold over the German people. In this 'major contribution to the study of the Third Reich' (Times Literary Supplement), Ian Kershaw argues that it lay not so much in Hitler's personality or his bizarre Nazi ideology, as in the social and political values of the people themselves. In charting the creation, rise, and fall of the `Hitler Myth', he demonstrates the importance of the manufactured 'Führer cult' to the attainment of Nazi political ends, and how the Nazis used the new techniques of propaganda to exploit and build on the beliefs, phobias, and prejudices of the day.

The Spanish Civil War by Hugh Thomas

Since its first publication, Hugh Thomas's The Spanish Civil War has become established as the definitive one-volume history of a conflict that continues to provoke intense controversy today.

What was it that roused left-wing sympathizers from all over the world to fight against Franco between 1936 and 1939? Why did the British and US governments refuse to intervene? And why did the Republican cause collapse so violently? Now revised and updated, Hugh Thomas's classic account presents the most objective and unbiased analysis of a passionate struggle where fascism and democracy, communism and Catholicism were at stake - and which was as much an international war as a Spanish one.
