Messy Play at Léman Early Years

Here at Léman, we hold a strong ethos within our Early Years team that children learn best through play. Learning through play is essential as it enables children to solve problems independently or with other peers, think strategically, develop their critical and creative skills and also develop a love of learning.

One way in which we do this is by providing opportunities for messy play. Messy play is a style of play in which children get to take the lead, explore and learn with their hands, and experience a wide variety of textures and materials. It also enhances every area of development by encouraging children to communicate effectively, develop their social skills and most importantly their physical development.

When children engage in messy play, they use their hands and fingers, which promotes fine motor skill development. Enabling children to develop their finger dexterity and hand and shoulder strength gives them the necessary skills for handwriting in the future.

Messy Play at Léman Early Years

Our Early Years classrooms provide many daily opportunities for messy play which the children all enjoy getting actively involved in. A particular favourite is the water and sand play and getting creative with the paints, on our very special paint wall.

Our new equipment in our outdoor provision has meant that our water play has now been extended and allows children to further their learning. Over the last week, we have seen children creating waterfalls, discussing and learning new mathematical concepts, explore new ways of collaborating together and of course – having lots of fun playing and learning.

Our specialised Early Years teachers enhance learning through messy play, by giving children tools for learning by questioning, adding in key knowledge and providing open-ended questions, for children to critically think and enhance their own learning and development through experiences.

Another key learning experience that we are currently promoting is independence. When the children engage in this kind of play they tend to get their clothes wet and a little bit messy. Don’t be surprised if your child comes home with damp clothes or covered in paint or food – it simply means that they have had a day of learning, exploring and developing. We are encouraging children to develop their independence skills and develop key skills in learning to tidy their environment and also manage their own self-care. This is a key tool that will enable children to become independent in the future.

If you would like any ideas on prompting independence or messy play at home, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us, where we would be happy to give you a variety of messy play ideas you could do as a family.
