Michelle Lopmeier

FS1 Teacher

My name is Michelle Lopmeier and I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  Following High School I lived in Cognac, France for a year as an au pair, improving my French and my taste for French cooking!  After attaining a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Development Studies and Anthropology from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, I fulfilled my dream to see more of the world.  I have travelled extensively in Africa and the Middle East, which fuelled my desire to live abroad to experience the world more fully.  I worked for many years in Canada in school-age day-care and after school programmes and knew that I was meant to work with children.  I received a Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario in 2002 and then moved to Dublin, Ireland.  I taught four, five and six-year olds for 3 memorable years in a school in the north of the city.  It was in Dublin that I met my Irish husband and we have been working and living abroad ever since!  I have lived and worked in Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Muscat and Dubai before coming to Doha.  I have taught children from ages 2-15 and have extensive experience with those students whose first language is not English.

I have decided to work at NAISAK as it is a supportive environment for both teachers and students alike.  The ‘High Five’ guiding principles demonstrate NAISAK’s commitment to achievement and the aim of ambition for all its students. I believe in a classroom that is supportive and accepting of all children of all levels of ability, a place where learning is fun and children can grow to be self-sufficient and confident learners.

I enjoy the outdoors and the peace and serenity that comes with it.  I’m looking forward to exploring Qatar’s nature with my husband and my dog.  I’m an animal lover and also have 2 cats at home.  All three animals are ‘rescues’ and I’m a passionate advocate for the term ‘Adopt, don’t shop!’.  I spent 2 years working at a dog rescue kennel and would like to be active in animal welfare here in Qatar.  Also, I haven’t been totally cured of the travel bug quite yet and my husband and I have a short list of adventures that we’d still like to take!

This school is different to all others I have worked at because of the distinctive qualities of each school, especially ones in the international category.  I am excited to work with my fellow teachers and my students and using my years of international teaching experience to make their time and my time here memorable.
