CISA Art Installation

This year all students created an art-work inspired by the theme ‘Art Through Time & Cultures’. Students ingrade 5 -10, researched the following as inspiration for their pieces:

Elizabethan,Victorian, Vikings, Medieval, Renaissance Urban Culture, Gothic, Celtic, Mayan, Australian Aboriginal, Tibetan, Ndebele, Xhosa, Zulu, Rajasthan, Maori, Tang Dynasty , Qing Dynasty, Egyptian period, Helenistic, Gauchos, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, Early Romantic, Baroque, Warli Tribe, Romantism, Latin American, C17th Dutch, Huli, Massai, Karen women, Himbatribe, Hmong, San Bushmen, Kazakh, Nenet Tribe, Ni-Vanuatu and Ladakh. Their focus was the symbols, iconography, patterns, fashion, logos and artwork of thetime or culture. Students chose from a very wide range of 3D media and materials including: glass fusing, modelling clays, felting, fibre and fabric, 3D pens, sculpture, paper pulp, papier-mâché, foil, wire, copper, plaster, moulded fabric, wood, cardboard, quilling and found objects.

SK

The Elizabethan Era was the starting inspiration for the SK students. The featureof the Neck Ruffle led us to play with manipulation of paper. After experimenting, students created a piece of art representing the patterned fabric in the main outfit, using the wet on wet technique, that they then cut ripped, folded, and curled. To add to this they scrunched tissue paper representing the textural quality.

Grade 1

They investigated the artwork by the Warli Tribe from India, the San Bushmen of South Africa, and the Maoris from New Zealand. Animals are a common theme in all these cultures' artwork so the students looked at emulating their styles at first creating a pipe cleaner line drawing of an animal and then translating this into layered images using simplified shapes of corrugated card and details of pipe cleaners and objects for eyes.

Grade 2

In studying patterns the students looked at the tie tye (Bandhani) from Rajasthan and the symbols used separately or repeatedly in the art of Kazakhstan, particularly the felting. They were working with textiles and some explored the technique of raghooking whilst others developed their design using fabrics, thread and beads tocreate Textile Art.

Grade 3

The art of the Mayan calendar together with the organic designs from Celtic Art led the Grade 3 students to produce an inspired piece using either the intricate paper quilling technique or the modern plastic fusing where they recycled plastic and colourful threads. Initial designs were drawn and developed and a deliberate colour scheme applied. Both these techniques were anew addition to their skill base.

Grade 4

Classes have been studying the Chinese dynasties. They studied the art from the Tang Dynasty to develop a design for their own lino print, printing being such an important and influential technique in the History of Art that having originated in China. To symbolise the past and a continuous fascination with the past, shards were used as a "canvas" for a collage of their lino prints and a collage to represent all the dynasties culminating in the present-day culture.

The doors were chosen to display the work to represent the idea of travelling and movement across time and culture. Come on a cultural and historic journey with us……
