Visual Arts at Leman

All students from Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 benefit from specialist art Lessons twice a week. When they choose Visual Art in the Middle Years, their lesson time increases to meet the MYP criteria.

The students have been incredibly creative and productive this term working in a wide range of media. Observational drawing alongside the elements of art and principles of design is the cornerstone of art skills. All students acquire and develop these skills throughout the units of work.

At Leman, Primary classes integrate Art with their current IPC unit. Senior Kindergarten focused on the face and making self-portraits. They have just finished collaborative works focusing on warm and cool colours. Grade 1 classes started the year with different ways to represent healthy eating by creating healthy food super heroes and are currently exploring projects focused on line, shape and colour. Grade 2s worked on abstraction and making dream homes and cityscapes. They are now working on ways to represent the human body using shapes with an emphasis on pattern. The Grade 3 classes worked hard on a collaborative puzzle community piece in collage (which was featured on the IPC’s Facebook page) and is now starting a unit on cave and aboriginal art. Grade 4s have completed a collaborative music project (resulting paintings will be in the Art Auction) and are about to start an exciting mural project in the gym. Grade 5 classes have made sculptures and are busy upcycling clothes for their fashion designs.

In Secondary, students have done painting, wood block and lino printing, water colour illustration, paper weaving and ceramics together with research, design and development. Art is a powerful means of communication and students have designed a piece of Art in response to the controversial issue of the endangered rhinoceros. Their intention is to increase an awareness in Asia. We have had skype interviews at entry points to units and an outing to a gallery where the exhibiting artist gave our DP students a personal tour of the show.

Examples of the students’ work can be purchased at the exciting Art Auction on December 7th.
