JKA  STEAM

This week we had a challenging question.  The question was how can someone survive jumping out of an airplane.  Some of us said we needed to bring a hot air balloon to jump into!  Then we discussed airplanes and how they work.  We began to discuss gravity and how gravity is what keeps us on the ground and not floating around.  Then, some of us put on serious thinking caps and realized that airplanes had very strong engines to keep them in the air and birds have very good wing that help them fly in the air.  We then watched a video about gravity and parachutes.  Then we discovered that using a parachute can help someone to jump out of an airplane.  Before making our parachute we tested if heavier objects or light objects would fall faster.  We discovered that heavier items fall to the ground first because of gravity.  Then we made parachutes  using cups, strings and we chose to use copying paper or  tissue paper.  We had no instruction on how to create the parachute, so we had to think about what a parachute looks like and create our own from the  materials.  Then, we took our parachutes and released them outside to determine which type of parachute would fall fastest.
