“In the year 79AD, Mt. Vesuvius erupted…..”

For our Active Planet unit, we have been learning how Earth’s tectonic plates move in various ways, causing earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanos to build and change the landscape. This activity has created many famous and terrible incidents throughout human history and we learned about one of them, Pompeii. Grade 2 decided to learn about this most famous of volcanic eruptions from almost 2000 years ago. We then wanted to share what we learned and to re-create what it might have been like for these ancient Romans; what kind of jobs they had, what were their interests, and what they might have felt when the mountain that had sheltered them for generations began to explode. We decorated our classrooms & ourselves, wrote lines & made designs, then shared our skills with our parents!

On Wednesday 28th March, Grade 2 performed their play ‘A Day in Pompeii’ to a massive audience of over 50 parents!

What our students thought on the day-

“Grade 2 has been studying The Active Planet, so we did a Pompeii play because we were learning about volcanoes. We worked hard to write our own lines, memorize them and act it out! We also created props and scenery for each of the three scenes. We made invitations to invite our parents to watch. A lot of parents came to watch. It felt great to see our parents come! We had to walk to different scenes-Start from G2B then G2A then G2C. We had narrators, actors and stage crews.”

It was a great success and enjoyed by students, staff and parents alike. We would like to thank all the parents who took the time out of their busy schedules to support the children in their learning.
