After months of preparation, Thailand knew the Wolves were on their way to Pattana on Thursday morning as the team howled their way through Changi airport, proudly wearing their Wolves tops. There was nervous excitement about the coming days, with the athletes hoping that their hard work would show through on the track, field, pitches and courts.
After an early start and several helpings of a hearty Thai breakfast, the team made their way from Basecamp to the athletics track to be welcomed at the opening ceremony by a performance from some traditional Thai dancers. This wasn’t to be the last spectacular performance of the day, as Olivia danced her way around the track to win a gold medal in the first race of The Games. This did much to settle the nerves of the DCIS athletes and set a high bar for the rest of the weekend. Coincidently, Olivia also cleared this high bar in the high jump event on her way to another gold medal.
As the athletics events progressed, the Wolves continued to place consistently in the medals. Maya, Jeongwoo and Ranveer all claimed 1500m medals, Karan and Feranmi stormed to gold in the 100m races much to the delight of the travelling parents. The 200m and 300m races brought more medals for Imogen Cole, Karan and Feranmi before Olly emptied the tank to take a bronze medal on the line in the 800m. As the relays approached, there were high hopes for medals and sure enough, the Wolves ran away with two bronzes, a silver and a gold in the Boys’ A race. On the field, Nahla took bronze in the discus and Lily (silver) and Pheobe (bronze) sprang into action at the long jump pit. Marjorie and George both threw a monster of a shot put to claim silver and gold respectively, before Feranmi, Olly and Imogen all took silver at the high jump.
As lunch arrived on day 1, we were already concerned that the flight luggage allowance may not be enough for our return journey, with the noise of medals everywhere as the team walked off the athletics track. The morning was a huge success. The afternoon saw the athletes take the pool and things continued to go swimmingly as DCIS’ won gold in the first IM event, with star swimmer Leonardo going on to win 4 golds and a silver. Aaron, Jaiveer and Jeongwoo all claimed medals throughout the afternoon, and Charlotte did brilliantly to win bronze in the 100m backstroke.
Day 2 and 3 saw the boys’ and girls’ teams take to the pitches and courts for football and basketball. Spirits were high after the successes of day 1 and the teams hit the back of the net, with 3 out of 4 bronze trophies being awarded to the Wolves. Amazingly, by the end of the Games, every student had won at least one medal. However, the students got far more from the trip than just medals. It was amazing to see friendships both created and strengthened. Our students were some of the friendliest at the Games; always happy to make conversation with other schools. Every member of our team made valuable contributions each day and they are all fantastic ambassadors for DCIS. Although our squad was small in comparison to other schools, their heart, passion and effort shone throughout The Games and this was recognized at the Gala Dinner, where they were awarded the ‘Spirit of the Games’ trophy. This award is thoroughly deserved and shows that the DCIS values go with our students wherever they go.
