Volcanic Activity in Year 3 The Year 3 Parrots, Puffins and Toucans have been immersed in their cross curricular topic, ‘Active Planet’. Over this half of the term they will be developing their knowledge of earthquakes and volcanoes through science literacy, geography and history. Year 3 Parrots Class Teacher, Laura Gildea explains more in this post. The Year 3 Parrots, Puffins and Toucans have been immersed in their cross curricular topic, ‘Active Planet’. Over this half of the term they will be developing their knowledge of earthquakes and volcanoes through science literacy, geography and history.

Starting with how a community copes in the aftermath of an earthquake the children suggested ways in which our school could be used as a relief centre. Working collaboratively the children discussed services that the local people would need such as medical care and shelter.

Creative talents were flowing in Lower Key Stage 2 when the children began to develop their writing techniques. They investigated, identified and applied a range of poetic skills while composing their volcano shape poems.  Similes, onomatopoeia and alliteration were used effectively to create descriptive and imaginative poems.

There are many exciting learning opportunities yet to come including researching historic volcanoes, presenting reports and creating an erupting model of a volcano!
