On Saturday 24th October, the British Vietnamese International School, Hanoi took both boys’ and girls’ teams to the U16 Volleyball championship finals.

Both teams had made it there due to their position in the league. The tournament kicked off with the girls’ semi-final which saw BVIS play BIS. We started strongly with Nancy and Jess serving well and putting pressure on their defence, with the girls running out 25-12 winners in the first game. The second game was slightly different with BIS starting to get more serves in good areas and testing our team’s resolve. It went down to the final game. At 14-13 up and just needing one more point to win, BIS hit the net cord but the ball still managed to find its way over and they claimed the point. It was such small margins! It finished with BIS being victorious in a very hard close-fought game. The BVIS girls should be very proud of their achievements as well as their attitude and endeavour!

And on to the boys tournament…

It came down to BIS playing UNIS and the winner of that game to face us in the final. UNIS came out 2-0 winners in a close game and were to be the team we played for the trophy.

The game was a bit edgy at the start, with both teams feeling the pressure of being in the final. As the game settled, BVIS started to show their dominance. Although technically gifted and accurate, UNIS could not breakdown our defence. Throwing bodies on the floor, stretching every sinew, BVIS would not allow any easy points to be given away. Anton and Jacob were remarkable in the backline which meant that the pressure was firmly on UNIS. This was to be the theme of the game, with BVIS starting to dominate at the net with Bob and Tung smashing home crucial points. A focussed, proficient performance from BVIS from start to finish! This resulted in BVIS winning 2-0 and are now crowned the 2015/16 HAC International Schools U16 Volleyball Champions!!!

What has been just as impressive as their technical skill and natural ability for the game is their teamwork, support for each other and the respect shown for the officials and opponents in both victory and defeat. Each and every boy and girl who has represented BVIS has been a fantastic ambassador for the school and we as a community and the parents at home should be extremely proud.
