Masterchef Masterclass

Six of BVIS’ finest young chefs took to the kitchen on Wednesday to compete for the coveted title of BVIS Masterchef 2016.

Presented with a surprise selection of ingredients, each pair were required to come up with a recipe and cook a meal in just an hour for five very hungry staff judges!

Each pair was given:

  • A chicken breast

  • An onion

  • Potatoes

  • Garlic

  • A bell pepper

They then had to choose one additional ingredient from:

  • Tinned tomatoes

  • Pesto

  • A mango

Never has the phrase, “If you don’t like the heat, stay out of the kitchen” been more true as the student chefs chopped, peeled, sizzled, boiled, grilled, roasted and simmered their way to what they hoped was ultimate gourmet glory.

Representing 13B, Le Hong Nhat and Nguyen Phu Duc decided upon chicken baked in a chilli-pesto sauce with roasted potatoes. The taste was unique and, we all agreed, delicious!

From 13V, Nguyen Thi Thuy Diep and Tang Thuy Nhat Linh presented (rather beautifully!) a roasted chicken breast with garlic chips and a mango salsa. Again, the taste was sublime and the girls had really stretched themselves with an original recipe.

The winners, though, were 13I’s Pham Hoa Tuong Vi and Chung Tuyet Linh, with their fried chicken breast, tomato and vegetable sauce and creamed potatoes. Judges Mr Shooter, Mr Lowry, Mr Williams, Mr Duff and I all agreed that the flavours together with the tenderness of the chicken cooked to perfection just edged them ahead of the other two finalists, seeing them crowned BVIS Masterchefs 2016!
