Staff Profile: Kim Moor

Kim Moor Reception Class Teacher Primary

Reception Class Teacher

After doing volunteer work in my old primary school in Bristol, I made the decision to become a teacher. I studied BA Honours degree in teacher training for 4 years at The University of the West of England; specialising in Early Years Education. This degree gave me experience right across the Primary age range and it was then I found I most enjoyed teaching the 4-7 age group.

I have been teaching since September 2007 in a range of classrooms from Reception up to Year 2. My NQT year was spent teaching Year 1, after which I spent a year qualifying as a Speech and Language specialist whilst teaching at the same school. As part of this training I learnt how to work with children with significant speech difficulties, in addition to becoming qualified in the use of Makaton (a child friendly form of sign language). From this school I moved to a school in Bristol city centre where I spent 3 years teaching Reception. It was here where I realised that the Foundation Stage is where my passion really lies. The teaching and learning style, range of curriculum, and the moment where every child realises “I can read!” is what makes me love my job!

I was looking for a new challenge in my career and after spending time in the US, Mr Moor and I decided that it was a place we were keen to explore further; so when an Early Years teaching post became vacant it was an easy decision to make. I spent my first year at BISH teaching in Year 1, and I am now in Reception.

Moving to the US has been my first significant move although my husband and I have spent time travelling here in the past, which is what inspired the decision to move to this country. We enjoy making the very most of our time here and exploring as much of America as we can. My husband and I married at Christmas of 2013 in the UK having met during our teacher training; he is also a teacher at BISH.

I am a keen dancer, and have been involved in tap, modern and Irish dance for many years in the UK. To ensure that I get the most out of my love for dance, in 2012 I qualified as a Zumba instructor, and extended this qualification to Zumbatomic in order to utilise these skills with the children I work with. To extend my skill set this year I have started the BISH Cheer Squad!

What the students say about me...

“I like her because she does fun Phonics with us.”

“I love playing Fives with you.”

“She makes people happy.”

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

I love working at the British International School of Houston as the children offer such a range of experience at such a young age. They have a clear appreciation of the wider world, and this allows the learning that takes place every day to take unexpected twists and turns making it fun, exciting and new for all involved.
