    Having graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Sociology and Social Psychology my career initially began working with individuals with different learning needs, with a strong emphasis on supporting those with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. I then made the decision to enter into the world of education and embarked upon a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. My teaching career began in my home town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where I enjoyed holding a range of additional posts that included Art Coordinator, and Coordinator for Gifted and Talented students. I became part of the Excellence in Cities project, which helped to raise the profile of AGT learners across the city of Newcastle and included the completion of additional training through Oxford Brooks university and a Certificate in Advanced Professional Studies.

    I obtained a BA Joint Honours Degree in French and Hispanic studies from the University of Birmingham, U.K., in 2005.  Shortly after this I decided to try my hand at teaching and trained for and achieved a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults.  Having thoroughly enjoyed my CELTA course, I went on to pursue formal teacher training through a work based training route at a boys’ grammar school in Birmingham.   I then spent my first year as a Newly Qualified Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages at the Sixth Form College Solihull near Birmingham.

During my graduate program, I completed a practicum at the clinic on campus and an internship year at Family Services of Greater Houston. I was a founding member of the Center for Postpartum Family Health, and I served on the board of the Houston Association for Marriage and Family Therapy for three years.

    I have been a teacher for 36 years! I think the fact that, after all these years, I still immensely enjoy teaching and derive a huge amount of satisfaction from working with children, is probably my greatest achievement. Back in England I have worked in a variety of schools in Yorkshire and Gloucestershire, from a 1,000 pupil Middle School to a 75 pupil village primary school. I have undertaken many roles: Class Teacher of year groups 2 to 6; specialist French teacher; Co-ordinator of Maths, Science, Humanities and Learning Support; Deputy Head Teacher and finally, I held the post of Head Teacher in two small village primary schools.

    After graduating with a degree in Psychology I initially began my professional life as a commercial manager with a large retail company in the UK. I moved 5 times in 5 years as part of my career progression which was good preparation for my life as and expat! In 1998 I left the UK to be with my husband in Equatorial Guinea where I began working with the British Council as an EFL teacher. Over the years since then I have worked on four different continents gaining a CELTA qualification from Cambridge University along the way.

    Most recently we lived in China where I was an EAL teacher at the British School of Beijing which is also part of the Nord Anglia family. I enjoyed my time there immensely but was delighted to hear that we would return to Houston as I had worked here previously. It is great to see the progress the school has made and work in such a fantastic new facility.

    I obtained an Honours Degree in Sociology and Social Policy in 1993. Following this I gained a Master’s and Diploma in Social Work from Keele University. From 1996-2006, I worked as a Children and Families Social Worker with the Local Authority I worked in a variety of statutory social work settings with vulnerable children and their families who were in crisis and complex situations, and where there was high levels of need and risk. I also spent three years at the N.S.P.C.C (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) as a Senior Practitioner in a Specialist Harmful Sexual Behaviour Team.

    I have been working one on one with dyslexic students since 2010. Prior to becoming an independent dyslexia therapist, I was a member of staff at the British International School of Houston from 2002 to early 2011, working as a Learning Support Assistant with students in Foundation and Key Stage 1. For a number of years I was also a parent here. I am fortunate to be continuing my association with the school in the capacity of private therapist, helping students both within school and also in my home in Spring, northwest Houston.

    I am a Licensed Dyslexia Therapist with the state of Texas and a Certified Academic Language Therapist.  I was born in Seville, Spain while my father was stationed at Morón Air Base.  After retiring from the military, my family moved to the Houston area where my father started a second career in the oil industry.  After graduating from University, I moved back to Houston with my husband.  Two of our three boys are married and by the end of August 2015 we will be welcoming our second grandson. I have many hobbies such as reading novels, bicycling with my husband on our tandem, traveling and spending time with our family in New Orleans.  My latest venture is setting up a beehive and learning to be an apiarist.  Ask me next year how that is going!

    I am a degreed education professional with a B.S in Journalism and Speech Communications from North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.  I have been working with school age, adolescent and adult learners for 20 years as Founder and Director of The Centre for Assisted Learning in Houston, Texas.  I specialize in working with students challenged by Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia and AD/HD by helping them develop unique and individualized solutions to their learning issues. I am Neuhaus and Orton-Gillingham trained in dyslexia remediation as well as a professionally trained AD/HD Coach from the Optimal Functioning Institute in Chattanooga, TN.  Four years ago, I had the distinct honour of being called upon by the British International School of Houston to provide specialized instruction for a growing and diverse student population.  Since then, it has been an absolutely enriching and rewarding experience that I hope to continue for years to come.
