Staff Profile: Kim Bassey

Kim Bassey Year 5 Teacher

Year 5 Class Teacher

I have been teaching since finishing University at The Rolle College of Education in Exmouth, UK in 1997. I started my career in Waterlooville, Portsmouth on a council estate, where teaching, in my newly qualified days was most certainly challenging.  I did supply teaching briefly in the Midlands and Oxfordshire area for a year before moving to an affluent village school in Balsall Common, Solihull. I taught there until 2005 then participated in a Visiting Faculty Program to the USA with the VIF programme. I was placed in a Magnet school for Science and Technology in Greensboro, North Carolina. Much to my surprise I was responsible for a Kindergarten class of rising fives! They survived and flourished. The experience opened my eyes to life in the US. So, when I got the call to apply for the British International School of Houston it was a “no brainer”, as they say. I have been teaching at the British International School of Houston for 10 years and almost feel like part of the furniture!

I came to the school in 2005 when I was called by Mrs. Brammer (the Deputy Head at the time), to come and teach. I had actually taught her son whilst he was in the UK in Year 3. Since being at the school I have been in management as Senior Teacher, Head of Key Stage 2 and Co-ordinator for Science. I have taught both Year 3 and Year 5 classes. My passion has always been for the classroom.

I have been living here in Houston since 2005. I was blessed to meet my husband Hosea, a San Antonian local, in 2007. Together we have 2 beautiful children; Grace Ima who is 4, and Ezra Aniekan who is 2. I have a passion for teaching and have discovered a new found interest in gardening since we bought our home. Much of our time is spent with family, the Nigerian community or at church. I try to stay active although being a mum to two young children has its challenges. We like to take small road trips together and in my down time I like to dream about all the travelling we will do some day! I enjoy listening to music and have an eclectic collection to say the least, ranging from Mowtown, classic R&B, nursery rhymes to African beats. I have a creative personality and am always known for my organisation, at home and at school! I enjoy arts and crafts and watching PBS- especially inspiring documentaries. My friends describe me as caring, kind and helpful.

What the students say about me...

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

This school is different to all others I have worked at because of the diverse community amongst staff and pupils. The children and staff come from such a wide variety of cultures, religions and backgrounds. It’s this unique mixture that makes the make-up of our school so exciting and inspiring to be a part of.

It’s unique because of the passion, commitment and inspiration of the staff. The staff here work incredibly hard to provide exciting learning opportunities for every student. Rarely have I seen such dedication! Everyone in the school community does their job exceedingly well, performs it with passion, and always has the children’s best interests at heart.
